Blackmagic Design 6K G2 Pocket

Nothing too exciting on the camera front but interesting that the Pocket cameras record the gyro data for stabilisation which can be used in an upcoming Resolve update. Seemed to work really well on the examples shown

I went from a Blackmagic hater to a Blackmagic shill. I love everything about the direction of the company and the personal nature of support. My Pocket 6K goes with me as my "A" cam on every wedding shoot for its image, versatility and low light from dual ISO circuit, but when BMD dropped the price of the Ursa 12K that too found a place in my wedding shoots and makes a balanced shoulder rig. For those people who say they don't want higher than 4K resolution, that opinion changes once you have your own experience with either of these two models. The 12K sensor is as unique in its own way as the Arri 35, 12288 x 6480 RGBWWW with equal numbers of RGB pixels and half are white. When you put it together with BRAW Resolve; a complete ecosystem that is a joy to use.

This thread seems like a 3-year draft that just got published, lol - where's the G2 in the title?!

I know that the point of this is to impart information but considering that they manufacture the hardware and software used to shoot and finish this piece, to me it's pretty weak visually. It looks washed out, the skintones are muddy, he doesn't pop against the back wall color, the tabletop feels too hot, and the dissolving between shots in the studio feels dated. Feels like a half-assed corporate piece shot in the corner of an existing office vs a purpose-built studio space within a multi-billion dollar corporation.

It's in the links.

And now the heading.

Looking for footage, didn't find anything aside of Petty's.

And, unlike others, I ain't getting paid by the BMD.

They've done probably around 40 of those by now for the past 10 years, and this one from today looks exactly like the first one back in 2012/2013. lol

They could definitely make it more modern but at the same time I like their consistency and how it doesn't look like a polished YouTuber video.

They just recycled the same camera like everyone else has been doing...it will look exactly the same as everything else out there from the first one.

They could keep the overall feel but make improvements to the set, lighting and grading (just swapping the wall panels to a more neutral or cooler tone would help). For me knowing this was shot on Blackmagic cameras is counterproductive to selling me on their cameras.

While it's probably the best value entry level cinema camera, it doesn't fit my uses. My biggest complaint is it the form factor. It's strange they used DSLR shape yet no one would use it for photography. It's called pocket but its rather large and unwieldy. I would have preferred if it used modular cube design that you could customize adding the accessories you want, (viewfinder, handle, power supply, lcd, xlr inputs). I get that there is no way they could or would change the design.

The update seem ok. No NDs...

I used to holler for an updated Micro years ago, but we never got one and the concept was abandoned.

The few body upgrades are kind of nice, but it hardly warrants being classed as “Generation 2.” This was very disappointing.

I really like the FX6 form factor, to some extent Canon cx00. I can understand cameras that are hybrid between photo and video it makes sense to have a photo body. These manufactures when they do get it right it seems like they stumbled into it because the don't have a clue what an actual user would want.

Box cameras are a strange curiosity to me, with so many opinions about what features belong on them and which ones don't. It seems like the only thing agreed on are 1/4-20 tapped holes. Panasonic makes a couple, no viewfinder, no xlr, Red is the elephant in the room but the screen on the Komodo is tiny and on top, a couple of Chinese brands too. Pocket 6K has mini-xlr and full size HDMI if not in box form. A few people on the BMD site are asking for a box camera but they could already have them now in other brands. What may be driving people to ask are existing accessories and the popularity of Atomos and other external display monitors with capability to record raw. BMD and Red cameras already have internal raw making this would be need redundant.

As for BMD Gen 2 being seen as a downgrade, the P6K Pro with in-built ND and HDR tilting screen and optional glass OLED viewfinder has not gone away and in fact will benefit from the new 7.9 firmware that avails gyroscopic metadata for post stabilization. The BMD detractors unspoken objections imo have more to do with the continued perception of BMD cameras being market disruptors. I was there. You open your mind to what it's like when your internal raw knows everything about the sensor because it's inside the camera and leverages hardware already in the camera to relieve your NLE of the intensive processing to debayer the sensor, not limited to 422 codecs. And a whole professional ecosystem awaits of cloud/editing/grading/broadcast suites of reasonably priced hardwares and softwares. And perhaps most important of all, BMD support that includes a forum with some factory participation, as well as phone and email technical support. I've used it. They are real people and others, friends of the people and the brand. I've talked to John Brawley. He helped me when I reached out to him. I helped BMD too when I identified a flaw in the debayer causing a particular moire. Tim Schumann who is #2 next to Grant Petty rushed out a beta firmware for my Ursa 12K. They are able to do that because the processor inside is FPGA. I know of no other camera that supports as many resolutions, frame rates, fast readout and out of the box color like Gen 5. I know something about this, I still have my F55 and R5 raw recorder. People may also not know that Grant Petty is a programmer who wrote the BMD camera operating system.

Yous probably correct. And, as we had touched up in the "where have the all the YouTubers gone?" thread, the Japanese cartel is limiting the number of new cameras and the excitement in the industry in general is on the wane, BMD 12K didn't set the world on fire but R5 did and that's who sets the market now and we're all waiting for the A7SIV because A7SIII is already two years old.
