GH6 with ProRes

I'm not a photographer and I buy photo cameras. I'd be counted among the 30k videographers Zippa lists...

BTW, didn't you go from GH-4 (MFT) to Fs-7 (APS-C) to A7SIII (FF)? To me, you're definitely on your way up to the medium format.

And, yes, pros will continue shooting on the stand-alone cameras. And smartphones. TikTok.

what's and smartphones tiktok mean? you can shoot on a real camera for tiktok

gh4/gh5 had superior video processing (full readout, 10-bit), which was why I chose them over full-frame offerings at the time. fs7 caters to a different type of shoot and became super cheap after the fx9 launched but was still in demand. i wish i had bought it earlier. a7siii finally caught up (in most ways) to the processing of the gh4/gh5, plus as I started shooting more weddings the low-light capabilities became more valuable to me.

My first camera was the 7D (aps-c). I sold that and bought a 60D and a GH2. Then GH4, 5Dmk3, GH5, C300mk1, FS7, a7siii, fx3, a7iv. not at all a straight path of increasing sensor size

medium format would have to entice me with processing/autofocus/low-light capabilities, and other i/o and nd features...

It's not there yet. Sony wants to do the 8K full frame for a couple more years before it brings out a medium format hybrid. But a stills geared MF may be coming within several months. That's my feel.

PS. A medium format hybrid will probably in the 50-70 MPX range on a smaller size. They'll need to have a sufficiently quick sensor readout for that too. With the high end camera, there's no need to be sloppy.

even then, I'm not positive that the marginal benefits would merit me upgrading when I can already do so much with my full-frame system. because at that point, you're not just buying into a new system but a substantially more expensive system.

but in part, it really comes down to the lenses. if they want to keep the lens size suitable for handheld operation, they probably can't go faster than f/2.8. so, while you might get better IQ out of that system, you might not get better low-light or shallower DOF

Much more. Which is why, I think, A7RV will be an important "bridge camera". If it's essentially R5 without the overheating, then the new Sony medium format model will be a much higher end - 150/200 MPX curved sensor and expensive new primes. Some time after that, you'll see a Fuji medium format with the same old 100 MPX sensor and a line skipping or cropped 8K. The early adopters of Sony MF models will pay huge premiums. The performance jump will have to be worth it.

Just reading tea leaves, mind you.

I'm not sure that photographers in general are seeing a growth in earnings to merit sinking way more money into gear. I hear from some that their rates aren't what they used to be, at least accounting for inflation

The other way to look at it - although, it has been noted here on more than one occasion that the rates have been falling due to the newer entrants into the business and a falling investment requirements of cameras, lens, lighting, editing, supporting gear, etc. - is that someone with the latest state-of-the-art model can, however temporarily, drum up a disproportionately higher amount of business. It's one of those above-the-market notions. Which is why someone like Eric Banned Coughlin went for ARRI over Canon : the brand brought him another layer of gravitas.

Jared "The Fro" Polin thinks Nikon will release a Z8, with the same/updated sensor as the three year old A7RIV (62 MPX) but the one that will have 8K and a decent AF for $3,500. These are essentially the same projected specs as A7RV. How will Sony respond? Currently, it has a $3,000 gap between A7RIV and A1 (not counting a "news/action" A9 II at $4,500).
