What are these bars?

I was never aware of the bars until this thread. Judging from my lack of bars I'm either a maverick or a jerk. Let's hope I'm the former. Anyone who needs bars maybe we can work out an agreement to like each other posts until we max out our bars. ;-)

Let's talk. I want a second row of blue rectangles.

If I recall correctly, I wasn't aware of orange squares until I had 3. I asked about them and Barry explained them. After that, it was all about the squares, but my sarcastic posts got me plenty of down votes. My need for sarcasm outweighed my need for squares... That's a life lesson right there I tell ya.

I participated on a sports forum and sometime in the mid-oughties, the forum owners/moderators discovered that such a plan was indeed in place and several posters had these "excellence bars" simply because of a backscratching scheme.

A friend from that sports site once told me that the most venomous exchanges he ever witnessed were on a wine forum. Now, try posting that 777 was the best fortified wine on the planet and see where it gets you.

You can have some of mine. I don't need them.

At NAB a few years ago Barry told me I had more orange dots than anyone else and I was like "orange dots?"

puredrifting is still the king sitting on top and what's really impressive about that is he stopped interacting here a while ago, and he was also part of the Canon-Sony war days. (His style of writing questioned a lot though so people were less offended by any strong opinions leading to less down-votes.)

The bars are mostly political as I wouldn't have enough screen real estate for mine if people didn't down-vote me so much during the Canon-Sony wars, or if one guy didn't downvote me here like 100x by himself.

Mitch, if you would have shown up in that part of the forum during those years, you might barely have 2 bars. lol

I once saw you post something slightly negative about the C200 when you were working at Panasonic and you received 7 downvotes for it and I never saw you there again. lol

Most of your votes by far came from your CD days.

That's not to discredit your knowledge because you're the man by far, but just to shed some light on how corrupt this system was.

With that said, BG has my respect the most because the amount of questions he's answered and people he has helped on here is unreal. It was during a different time in the world and industry, but still.

FWIW, I looked up Dan "Pure Drifting" on his own site and the one he occasionally writes for. He's active there.

I basically used DVXuser as my tech support forum for Convergent Design. I answered questions all over but would direct people here just because I had amassed so much content in one place. I can't imagine how many times I listed out all the recording formats, frame rates, resolutions and run times.

I didn't realize I was ever downvoted from a C200 post. I never really paid attention to any of that. I think I may have pointed out something about a limitation on its video output (can't remember but maybe something like the SDI only being HD instead of 4K?). I generally didn't like posting specific criticism of competitor's products if only because it's kinda rude. Sing one's own praises and let people figure out if the others can keep up. But then there are times I can't help myself. ;-P

It was likely barely anything - but if you were somebody, anybody on the forum who developed any kind of character, personality, reputation, almost every post at any time was going to be either upvoted or downvoted.

And if you had a good amount of likes or dislikes on a particular post, forget about it; some minds only need to see a few votes favored one way or another and they immediately agree or disagree, too.

Meanwhile, sometimes new users had really newbie questions or were genuinely trying to help someone randomly and were downvoted, and the poor souls were never seen again. lol

Took me three years to discover I posted this and forgot about it. No wonder I didn't have many bars. Sorry about that. But thank you to everyone who replied. Now I know and I guess it doesn't matter anymore anyway. Nobody seems to have any bars.

Although I didn't know it at the time (didn't use it), post #32 is word-for-word reddit.

It's so toxic (never used that word in this context before) that it's not even toxic, it's just reddit.

Insane amount of up and downvotes for barely anything, snowballs rolling down hills 24/7.

I had no awareness of these "bars" even when we did have them. I tend to not notice such things. I do see in my profile that I have a certain number of "trophy points" and I'm wondering if I can cash them in at some point because, haven't won a trophy since swimming league in grade school.

For sure. It's amazing the power of suggestion. I see the same thing with my kittens. One gets scared and runs and the other follows. It's got to be a survival thing.

There has to be a glass countertop around here somewhere where these can be turned in for little candies and stickers and useless toys. Maybe that cool mini boombox if you have a billion of them.

The system was cooler before because it was so old school. Even the emojis were very early 2000s, ha.

The rankings don't matter but I did like seeing the amount of posts under people's names. (Now you have to hover the mouse or click...and they call them messages which is confusing because messages are messages, direct or private, and posting = posts.)

With that said, all the old cats are gone one-by-one, only once in a blue moon making a post or just really gone.

Don't I get to be saddled with "old cat"? I mean, in a month I hit my 20th anniversary on this site (thank you for teaching me the hover method, which is how I just learned my join date!)
