Settings to shoot a promo for DVD Instructional video

Hey guys,

Recently got an XH-A1 and have been tinkering with the bells and whistles. Picked up a little side job shooting an archery tutorial that will go straight to DVD and was just wondering what the best settings to shoot it will be. It'll mostly be indoors from what I'm told and not require any post on my part. Should I film in SD? HD? 24F? 60i?

Just thought I'd see what you guys had to offer as far as insight; kind of new to the whole 'filming for a job' so it's always good to get some help.

i don't know...it's a common suggestion to shoot HD so you always have HD on tape. down-converting is a breeze and will produce favorable SD results. what more do you want to know specifically?

"indoors" is too broad...is it a gymnasium, bowling alley, church? you can shoot bow-n-arrow anywhere indoors if you think about it.

Yeah, indoors is a bit too broad. I'm having a face to face with the producers tomorrow evening to just iron out these details.

I would shoot standard in 16x9 format. If you don't have a good monitor you will kick yourself in the tail, I know about this all too well. :) I would shoot standard in wide format if you are new to this, you will save yourself a ton of frustration.

I would spend some time shooting HDV in practice first so you can get a feel for the camera and then in 24 mode as that is even more intolerant of mistakes.

Cheers,

I shoot everything in HDV and if the project requires down conversion I do it in camera. If I want to reframe or crop a scene I capture it in Cineform and resize it on the timeline to suit my needs. There really is no good reason to shoot standard definition that I can think of. I find the downconverted footage looks better than footage shot in SD.
