We shot this last Monday - it was basically a camera/mic/actor test for a GTA_IV short my friend is producing. He has a Serbian background so he is interested in doing a live version of the Serb-centric part of the GTA_IV story.

I used the Edirol r-44 field recorder and rented the Sanken cs3-e microphone, very nice mic. It was good learning experience.
We shot with Nikons of course.

It all looks great until the pan near the end

Do you think that is..

-my computer?
-shutter speed?
-the conversion ?

Which Nikons?

I registered just to tell you this FREAKING ROCKS! Talented all the way around. Great camera skills, editing, and even the acting was good!

Very nice! I loved GTA from the start, but haven't gotten into the new ones...not enough time like in the old college days haha, and the main character felt much like the one in the game, I liked how he started out not talking...it VERY much has the GTA feel. SWEET! (Great location BTW! What city?!)

i agree that its pretty nice also but, the very last few phrases of dialogue from the guy on the right (shorter guy) are very missed focused. just curious...to the OP, was this on purpose or was this just missed and then stuck with the clips short of doing it over again?

no offense to you personally but in general this really bothers me about this camera when only using the LCD, even with a device like the Hoodloupe 3.0. i see this slight missed focus a lot with this camera.

what were you using to judge focus? LCD, portable monitor...?

i find that i end up with more of these missed focus types of clips more than i would like to admit to when using the 5DMKII. for a pressure type paying job i tend to stay away from the 5D and just use my EX-1 because i can at least predict a very high ratio of IN FOCUS shots (thanks to peaking and my Nebtek SDI) vs what i can get with the 5DmkII shooting shallow.

a beautiful but very dangerous tool to use IMO.

thanks

let me first start out by saying. this looks amazing. hey matthew, when doing the 24p conversion do you find you can get the motion to look at least as good as the hvx200. The temptation to pick this up for doing shorts only is becoming unbearable.

Just downloaded the quictime of this file, burned it to dvd and watched on the tube. Motion was flawless, and visuals screamed film.

All I have to say is, the guy you got to play Roman is SPOT-ON. Looks and sounds EXACTLY like he does in the game.. good work! If you end up going through with making this into a short I definitely want to see it! The guy playing Nico has the right attitude and everything, but the look isn't selling it for me like the actor playing Roman is. Maybe if he had short hair, but the long hair and lack of the whole "grizzled" look Nico has, didn't really work for me.

All in all, very nice work though. Looking forward to seeing more of it

I just have to say that that video is all around amazing! The acting, the clarity of both the video and audio, the fact that it's GTA4, even the font was exactly GTA4 font, it's ridiculous! I just hope I can get a beautiful picture like that outta my XH-A1 when I get it. Damn man. Great work.:):):):)

I haven't watched it with sound yet, but lol at lil' roman and niko. Clothes are perfect, roman looks like well...roman! The niko actor is too white american looking but what can you do.

I too am curious about your workflow to get 24p. What are you doing?

Awsome short by the way.

Hey papa, i burned that short to dvd and played it back on the tv and it looks better than anything i've gotten out of my canon a1, hvx200 and adapters. I ordered yesterdy. for what i do, this will probably work being that i don't shoot action scenes yet, and if the high motion project do come up I'll use my hvx200a for those scenes.

I also went on vimeo and found someone had done a split screen test with the sony ex1 and the mark II for low light comparison. the ex1 had a 12db gain while the mark II had none and they were both under a 100w light. The mark II was so clean, saturated with the creamy bokeh, and the ex1 became unbearable to look at, as it became grainy and washed out. This is when I said alright canon you win. I pulled out my card and the first authorized canon dealer I got on the phone had my $2700.

24p or not. I've yet to see bad footage coming off this cam, even in the hands of a novice.

Awesome!!!

Awesome!!!

Great shots, acting, editing, Sound is superb and it being GTA4 makes it super fantastic! Gotta shoot the feature now

This is very well done. Thanks for posting. If you don't mind, please explain your workflow to 24p and how well (or difficult) it was to sync the sound. How were you recording on the R-44 (bit depth, etc.)? What about lighting? All natural? I apologize if I'm drilling you a lot here, I'm just very interested because this is so well done.

looks dope.

gotta ask though. was all the line jumping on purpose?

i mean, i'm the first guy to put on the "f*ck the 180" hat, but it did kinda throw me off in places. namely, the OTS shots.

This is so wierd, cuz I'm in the middle of beating GTA IV right now, and I'm in a game-fix with that game..The Roman character was nailed totally.

Purposely the 180 degree rule was broken here, there were many creative maneuvers used, and I liked it.

Like the others have said, the Niko Character is a tad too American looking, but still pulls it off.

Fine job, and I'm really really really stunned by the quality of the footage.

I never thought anybody would attempt to emulate the storyline, and I must say it kicked ass, as does all your stuff Matthew (I've been tracking your stuff from Andromeda->D90->and MK2).

I might be pushing the button a tad, but would it be possible to get a higher-res version uploaded? I'd love to judge it in pristine quality. Minus focus issues (understandable), kicked major ASS.

Great sound, and sharp pictures. I also liked the color palette. Did you bring in any G&E gear for controlling the light or was this all natural? Any color grading?

Like others have mentioned...180 degree rule.... I didn't really see a reason for breaking it here. It was just distracting to me. Also, Roman's shot in particular in the first scene had some issues with composition, at times he didn't have enough looking space.
