HMC150 questions answered...

Yeah that is one of the only disappointments with the HMC150, it requires an all-new (intelligent) battery. The upside is that you get much more accurate battery life shown on the camera's display

I see. Thanks.

And, yes, more accurate battery life display is always a welcome feature.

barry, i`m reading your book, and, about 35mm adapter, i thinking to buy letus 35 extreme, but in your book you didnt recommends any lenses, and i dont know: the lenses must have autofocus, or not? What lenses should i use? I dont have any idea... could you indicate one for me? (Whith a good performance and reasonable price) and tell me how to choice one? thanks One more thing, i wish to use it (letus, rod support and lenses) with hmc150 and hmc40...

Autofocus lenses will not autofocus with an adapter. So if you're planning to get an adapter, you really would be better off with manual-focus lenses.

Most people seem to be happy with the Nikon manual lenses. I'm using a Nikon 17-35 zoom and the Zeiss ZF prime lenses as my manual lenses. But those aren't cheap, they're pretty much at the top of the price range for still-camera lenses. There's lots of lens discussion on this forum, dig around and you'll find many recommendations from many people.

ok, but i am really new in this questions... so, any manual lens will work with letus? I mean, i dont need to worry with compatibility issues? Sorry by this basics questions... but i`m reading exactaly to learn... if there isnt any problems whith compatibility, i will look for any discussion forum about it... thanks again... and one more thing, the nikon 17-35 have autofocus... i didnt understand....

It *has* autofocus, but it's not exclusively autofocus. It also has manual focus. Autofocus will not work with an adapter.

You mainly want to make sure that whatever lens you're looking at has full manual control of the aperture and of the focus. That's what you need in order to be compatible.

ok barry, but let me know: You told me about your lenses, one of them, the nikon 17-35mm. This is a wide-angle lens, and in your book, you say the wide-angle lens should be used for a deeper depth of field, if i will use it(nikon 17-35mm) with letus35 for a shallow depth of field, how will be the film with this tow parts together? Will i produce a shallow DOF?

Well -- yes and no. I mean, when zoomed in to 35mm, the DOF will be a lot shallower than your camera alone. At 17mm it'll be fairly deep. A wide-angle lens isn't going to give you as shallow DOF as a telephoto lens will. An 85mm or longer lens will give you really shallow DOF.

Hello, maybe off topic but,
"For a given format size, except at close-up distances, DOF is approximately determined by the subject magnification and the lens f-number."

And for close up
"...for a given magnification, DOF is independent of focal length. Stated otherwise, for the same subject magnification, all focal lengths give approximately the same DOF."

ok, now, with letus35, what should be the hmc150 config? All in auto mode? 35mm at nikon lens, is like how much zoon with hmc150? And with telephoto 80 and 100mm what zoom level will i have? (i mean, 2x, 10x, etc...) Once again, sorry for this question, i`m really learning almost every thing here, in this forum...

When using an adapter, you don't really have any zoom range. You use the HMC150 lens to focus on the adapter's ground glass, at a fixed range.

Definitely don't use all-auto, you need manual focus and you absolutely must turn off image stabilization.

35mm at the Nikon lens would be about 8mm on the HMC150's zoom.

great, thanks barry.... so, i should config my hmc150 to manual focus, and OIS off... any tihng else to know? Iris, of too? And, about the zoom levels of leses, can i just calculate as 35mm=8mm so 70mm=16mm?

The multiplication factor to use is 4.4; so a 35mm movie camera with a 50mm lens will deliver a field of view about equivalent to a 1/3" camera zoomed to 11.4mm (50mm / 4.4 = 11.4mm)

Manual focus, manual iris, and use autofocus to establish the proper focus on the adapter's ground glass, then switch to manual focus, and in fact move the focus/iris switch over to "iris" so you can't even move the focus ring.

thanks again... one last question... could you tell me how should i know how much zoom 8mm represents? i mean, 2x, 4x, etc....
