"Time In A Bottle"- A film by Robbie and Kegan

Robbie, Wonderful film. You just keep getting better and better.

I really liked your actresses a lot. Working with kids is not easy and I thought they were great - very natural and the lead actress was subtle and I felt the pain of her loss.

Lastly, as always, Herman's music was a perfect accompaniment for this touching film.

Well done.

Thanks for the comments guys. There were some deviations we had to make from the original screenplay that took out some of the emotional firepower that was intended, but I think that we got a strong performance from the girls.

I will admit however, that the lead actress' facial expressions could have been worked on a bit, as well as her walk that opened the film...it was just hard to control either, considering how cold it was that day.

Come to think of it, if we weren't on such a tight timeline at the very end - I would have rescheduled for a different day. Ah well, not justifying anything at all...they're all valid points.

Rodney, thanks for the comments. I agree that working with actors is very important and I'm sure Robbie will take it into consideration and schedule rehearsals the next time around. It's just sometimes difficult when everyone's schedule is so crazy and the actor's are young (ie - have to miss school, or weekend function, etc) and doing it for free. I can't speak on Robbie's behalf, but I'm sure that he appreciates the advice on getting to know your actors.

Chris, I have to thank you for bringing Time in a Bottle to our attention. Without you pointing us in this direction, we might have decided with something completely different.

Mike, comments appreciated as always and glad it had the intended emotional effect for you.

Keep the criticism coming guys!

Kegan

This was a very sweet and endearing film, you guys. It was rock solid and I can most certainly appreciate the story. The acting was all very good. You really are coming up in the world of filmmaking, Robbie.

Now, as lawriejaffa had so eloquently put it in another thread, this film ran the risk of being "easy" with sentimentality. I dare suggest that this film does indeed run close to easy sentimentality, but it is grounded by the performances, the structure, and sturdy production values.

Sure, it borders on sentimentality, but it still has a BIG heart, and I love that.

Really nice work here!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I appreciate it a lot.

I have to disagree with Rodney as well, as I thought the acting was veeeery natural, and very skilled/talented.

I am learning, as is Kegan, and I guess my only goals are ot make my next film better than the last!

Just saw this, and I must comment because I think Tony Little is a fascinating television personality, much like Billy Mays. Eventually, I would love to do a parody infomercial including both of them. :)

Hey I can't be right all of the time. I was mostly referring to their approach anyway, so sorry I didn't clarify. Kind of threw me off a little there. The actors for the most part were very good, but the approach really didn't work for me. Skipping along like that... just doesn't work for me.

Robbie you've got a good piece here, but it's simply just good. Take it for what it's worth dude.

Good film Robbie (I like this much more than the other one you entered). I think the score really helped bring this to life for me.

...now tell me why that bridge looks so familiar????

Rodney, now that you mention it, I think you're right about the skipping.

I can see what you're saying here definitely!

Robbie

Regardless of the skipping fitting the film or not, Tony Little is still awesome.

I agree that it might have pushed the child-like aspect of the film harder, but it wasn't really bothersome. Just something to consider.

I was privy to the screenplay before filming, and think Kegan and Robbie did it justice. I believe they mentioned 6 minutes sliced off some opportunity to explore more emotional drama, and I agree. Kinda get the pay-off way at the end, and it's not really 100% clear what she's doing with the bag - and why a bag? - until the ashes scatter (far too few ashes, by the way).

Anyways, the actors did a good job. Much to be proud of for each of them.

I'm a little bored with kids being cast as 'kids' and would have liked to have seen a little more depth to them besides just being 'girls'. It would have made the pain of loss a little deeper and sincere. There could have been a bond beyond just a jar of goodies, though I know that stuff is mega-important in a child's eye.

Don't be afraid to make a good script better!!

Nice film, Robbie and Kegan. Already looking forward to see what you do next!

Robbie, kudos to you and Kegan for this effort. Dammit, you actually touched me with it. You've come a long way and should be proud of this.

I would have liked to seen the ashes in a better container than a paper sack AND there needed to be more of them.

The girls' acting was all right, not the best, but served the story well.

Good job. This has been your best effort yet.

Robbie, Keegan - this was great! Its a nice simple story and you two did it justice. Congrats. Keep up the good work. Little things could be changed here or there (nothing that hasnt already been mentioned) but it was a nice looking picture and the story played out well - held my interest the entire time - hard to do :)

And congrats on touching Blaine. Thats disgusting.

A nice film with some effective acting. I admire your use of a younger cast, it can be difficult at times but you seemed to get what you needed out of them. The music was a great choice and I liked the grading you chose to differentiate past/future. Good work

Thanks Alex. The ashes were tought cause I didn't know what they looked like in real life, nor did I know homuch to throw.

The talent just grabbed a handful, and threw them. It wasn't suppose to be ALL of them. :)

Thanks man, some people say it's B&W, but I think their monitors are just messy, haha.

Robbie

This had a really solid feel to it, folks, and I rated it highly. I really enjoyed this, but for me at least it was unclear on WHICH one had made it, and which one passed away. I was also confused as to what exactly she had spread, but I'm guessing perhaps the other girl's ashes?

Framing, audio, score, everything was pretty pro on this. Again, a good, sentimental film, which I enjoyed.

Dang, Herman was INSANELY busy!!!!

Robbie, this was good man! I thought the story was good, very touching and you did a solid job with the directing. Both the little girls were fine but your lead was definitely good... she gave off a lot without saying much at all. I think this is a strong film overall and this is definitely my favored of the two you submitted this go around. Thanks for sharing!

Watched this and i was moved by it. Very good job at that... The kids are awesome and the grown up character is beautiful... I think it's definitely one of my favorite so far! I was pulled into the story itself that i didn't pay any attention to the technical parts... there maybe nothing for me to look for anyway! Great job man!
