it wasn't bad considering compression on top of, what looks like a faulty camera or should say prototype. skew is there, but not nearly as bad as the d90. dof looked fine. but what's weird is that he says it can't go any slow than 1/60th? why 1/60th? he compressed it to 720p which sucks cause I wanted to see full 1080 and I don't want someone else compressing it. 24p was good too. other than that, June is still a few months away for them to get the compression ironed out.

you have to log in to d/l the clips.

The panny is tempting but I'm really not liking the 2x crop factor......my wide lenses aren't wide enough as it is on the D90.
For clarification, there's not a 2x crop factor from the D90 down to the GH1. It'd be a very small crop difference between those two (with the D90 having the wider field of view). The 2x crop factor is in reference to a 35mm full-frame still camera, vs. the GH1.

I don't think the hvx does this. Can someone clarify? 1080p24 in a 1080i60 stream. My hv20 does.
Yes, the HVX in 1080/24p mode embeds 24fps within a 1080/60i stream, as does every Sony HDV camcorder and the HV20, etc.

In 24pA mode it does something different but similar; it's still within a 60i stream but it's four progressive frames followed by a "padding" frame. But yes, it's recorded as 60i.

Pretty much all 1080/24p has traditionally been recorded as 60i; the newer pro cameras (XHA1/XLH1, EX1/EX3, and any AVC-Intra camcorder) can record 1080/24p as native 24p with no pulldown. The HMC150 also does this; AVCHD does provide for 1080/24pN.

all of these different cameras are just making my head spin.

Is there a DSLR that offers 1080 24p, with free choice of shutter speed (1/48th preferably ) with the ability to record sync sound, without jello vision? Also one that would allow you to use 35mm lenses without having to suffer a crop factor due to smaller sensors? It just feels like they are so close but a few features throws them off from being what we need?

What seems to be the consensus? Wait?

Do you like what you see there? I definitely not very much...

I see skew people...but not so much that it looks obnoxious. I could work around that amount if that's the worst aspect of the camera. The banding and lines I'm willing to ignore, my guess is that the prototype model is running debug code at the software level which always runs slower than production software. I'll be surprised if it's an issue by release time.

Yeah I saw those late last night, the quality was slightly north of total crap. So I didn't think linking was worth it. I'm shocked that nobody tried this camera out that knows what their doing in the three days it was on display that happen to be in the area of the PMA show...

This footage looks worse than HDV on its ugliest of nights. You look at the D90 when it came out, and if you put aside the jello issue, and were to triple the quality of the compression setting and that's it; the D90 is better in it's core image.... The D90 has a more organic higher density image than what we see on the GH1 just comparing what's seen as of now. If the GH1 is trying to be the quality of a HDV camcorder than Panasonic is missing the whole point and is useless, since a HVX, HV20 or A1 will do way better. We want what the D90 was striving to be and the 5D mark II is closer to becoming; which is a dense imagery that has much better color, resolution, and exudes an image quality that is far from anything a camcorder or any video cameras have done up to this point.

except they don't have shallow dof. well, at f/4 the gh1 doesn't excel either but it's still better and at f/2 or so we're talking the real "35mm look", and since the other advantage is that we can put almost any lens we want on it this is exactly what we'll do. i sincerely hope there's a "cinegamma" setting or similar in there, because i'm neither shooting tv news nor home movies very often, and i agree that it seems like that's the look they've been trying to create.

I don't see anything incredibly bad about the clip. Especially being compressed like that. Doesn't look any worse than HPX170 footage, to be honest.

Do you remember how horrible the 5D MKII Tradeshow footage looked? Or was that the D90? Either one looked like CRAP. There was something weird going on with the colors and everything.

I'm not going to really judge on that. There's a while til June and a lot that could change. Still got hopes.

from looking at the footy, jello vision is here to stay. bah.

There's nothing really wrong with "jello vision", man. When it's excessive, sure. But how often are you doing these sorts of wild shots? And, if you are, then you aren't going to be using this anyway so it's cool...

I shoot RED often, I see Jello ALL the time but I've played footage back on large LCDs etc and nobody has an issue with the Jello Effect. It's very present, especially when I'm on a telephoto lens in 3K or 2K, which further crops out of the lens (Aka the 135/2 Nikon becomes like a 200+.)

Don't dare do a slow-mo shot, either, or the leaning is gangsta beyond belief. But, it just doesn't really matter. Once you start shooting and you're doing what you're supposed to with the camera, this Jello stuff's no big deal.

Would I like a global shutter? Yes. I'd like a lot of stuff, but right now it ain't happenin' so I don't let it hold me back.

Those that are concerned with 2x crop factor he's an example of how much you'll lose. This was shot with a 28mm f/2

What seems to be the consensus? Wait?

They are all about 90% close to being a digital 35mm film camera. At this point they are lacking in the following areas-

5DMKII only does 30fps, no manual shutter or iso
D90 too compressed, overheats, no manual shutter or iso, 1.6x crop factor, no 1080p.
GH1 2x crop factor, still highly compressed but not as much as the D90.

They all suffer jellovision which is manageable with the use of a stabilizer, fluid head tripod, or shoulder rig. The GH1 footage we've seen is using a lens with optical image stabilization, so I'd expect the jello with a prime lens would be similar to the other cams especially considering the panny weighs half as much and has a smaller form factor.

None of the serious filmmakers here are too concerned about sync sound as we are using dedicated recorders.

The crop factor is only an issue in lens selection. My problem is that a 1.6x or 2x crop factor means I have to use slower glass at the wide end. The advantage is though you get faster glass at the telephoto end.

Stepping back a foot is all well and good if you're not walking into a wall!

The 5D and D90 could be the dream camera with a firmware update, but after 6 months I'm losing hope that it will happen. The GH1 seems to be an improvement but we won't know for sure until we can get our hands on it. I think we might have to wait for the 2nd gen model from each manufacturer before we get something we are satisfied with.

Wait? Well it all depends on whether you need to shoot something now and how you want it to look and how much you have to spend. If I can't get something better by June I'm shooting my feature on a couple of D90's. But it really upsets me when I look at the stills I get out of it and compare them to the movies. When they finally get it right I'll be a very happy man.

I have my D90 mounted on a steadytracker with a 28mm nikkor prime. I can run with it, do crane like tracking moves, pans........no jello. And I'm no pro steadicam operater, I was getting these smooth shots after a days practice. There may be some minor jello but your average punter isn't gonna see it and I'm not gonna cry about it.
