600ft - a s16mm camera test

Great looking stuff!
I've been looking to head this route myself for some projects.
35mm is too expensive for my budget at this point.
I'm glad to see other people wanting to head back to film, having that dynamic range really makes a difference.

Yeah, the funny thing is you can shoot legit 35mm short-ends and have them processed for cheaper than shooting 16mm or even 8mm. Once you get into telecine, its all the same price weather your doing 8mm, 16mm or 35mm.

I have a 2C and a Mitchell GC as well. Short/Medium ends help with the cost, but processing is still .10 per foot minimum.
Shooting 35 takes 2.5 times the stock of shooting S16. 16 frames per foot for 35 vs 40 for S16, so for a micro budget project I haven't been able to make the numbers work for 35 yet but Cinelicious definitely brings it closer, and shooting 3 or 2 perf may drop the cost enough to make it a reality.

If you have better deals on Raw stock than $.25 per foot for medium ends(up to 400'), I'd love to check that out. :)

Chris

35mm is cheaper in the long run
also less technical problems
but camera is heavier, granted
I use the Arri 2c to shoot my movies in 35mm and short ends
... which I sell out of Hollywood at best prices
all tested and color-matched

Yes, 2-perf is where its at, Bruce Taylor has a few 2-perf cameras (indi35.com) that would really make it affordable, then it really is cheaper than 8mm!

How heavy is that Mitchell by the way!?

Hehe. Well the bodys not bad, but the motor makes it very heavy. Tripod or dolly only. I haven't weighed it but maybe 25lbs.
I'll check out indie35.com to check their rates, thanks for the link!

35mm eh?

its refreshing to see someone COMPLETELY bucking the trend, haha

f**kin awesome.

Well, the camera showed up today! I just checked everything out and practiced loading it a few times. This thing SERIOUSLY feels like its made of cast iron, built like a tank but it sure is heavy!

Arriflex BL-2, set up with a 25-250mm on the front and a 1000' mag on the back....

And here is what it looks like through the viewfinder:

Im hoping to shoot something cool by the end of the week, now I just have to think of what it is I am going to shoot!

Sweet! How quiet is it?
Even with a shoulder mount, that is going to be heavy, but I'm sure it will shoot some fantastic stuff. I've only shot a few small tests with my 2C, but it's fun to shoot film. Nothing like screening dailies at the lab. 5205 is grainless, perfect!

Its pretty quiet, quiet enough for sync sound anyways. There is a large sound barney that came with it so I think that would help for tight spots.

It defiantly sounds different than my aaton though, this sounds like a more damped "purr".

I've been wanting to get my own blimped sync sound camera too, but can't justify the cost. For the number of shoot days that I would have it's cheaper to rent at this point. If I do buy, I'll probably go to Super 16 if I can find a cheap enough aaton or eclair, and then move on to 35 when my budget allows. Toys like this are addictive. : )

Sorry i have watched it 3 times and i am not knocking the filming but as so many have been knocking video i had to come in and say what is all the fuss about i have seen loads of better video film.if you like the old look well and good but i know which i prefer.

Film and video are tools used to tell stories. Some people prefer one over the other. Neither is right, neither is wrong.

I personally love the look of film. 35mm, 16mm and Super 8mm all have their own looks to them, they are just tools, one may be more appropriate than the other for a particular project.

I am of the believe that if any tool, film or digital, should become unavailable, it does a great disservice to filmmaking as an artform. Artists should have as many tools as possible available to them to express themselves.

Hunter, thats awesome!

Did that 25-250mm Angenieux come with it? Thats the lens I was telling you about that I got for my Red and just freakin love how it looks.

Shawn, it came in the package along with some other lenses. I really like this lens, I think its a great pair for the Red.

My upcoming DVXUser Lossfest entry is shot entirely on that lense. The lens really needs support, so front-heavy! I super-glued some Zacuto gear strip to it so I could use a FF, though the lens is a bit sticky.

What other 35mm lenses came with it? Is it Arri std mount or PL mount?

A Zeiss standard speed set, a few telephoto lenses, macro... Im sending you a PM with the list. They are being fitted with PL mounts.
