Driving Across Country...what do I NEED to see?

man too bad the mother in law is in tow.....how big is the trailer?..........if it's far back enough you and your honey ought to try some nasties while watching the sunrise going thru the desert...(oh the memories) yeah we had a jeep and took down the top and she held on the roll bars and uh sorry got carried away there........

head to Bryce Canyon, the most elegant, sculptural rock formations you will ever see in Utah or anywhere

Wow. I knew it was going to be a good idea starting this thread. I never even knew about this place and its beautiful. I've got some decisions to make. I'm having a great time mapping this out and cannot wait!

lol! Actually, if I had my way I'd ship my gf back by plane and just drive out with the in law. Shes WAAAAAY cooler about this stuff then she is and is looking forward to it as much as I am. The girlfriend...well, she'd rather scratch her eyes out than drive across the country again.

What I really need is a dude on this trip. What Rice said about kicking back with a six pack at Bryce Canyon just spoke to me. I'm gonna have to work on gettin' one of my brothers out here...I mean sheesus...this is shaping up to be a regular hen party. After we pick up the aunt in Denver...I will want to SHIV myself by the time we get to Santa Fe.

But don't worry. I'll make sure to get it on tape...

Speaking of 'ewwww' ...

I'm not much of an Arkansas fan, but that's because I only see most of it via I-40. I did take a side trip up 540 once (i believe ... right around exit 12 or so). Beautiful! BUT, I went in the summertime when everything was alive. It would be dead right now. There's an amazing bridge over a valley between two peaks about an hour up 540. It's really quite amazing.

If you don't take 540 and decide to head east via I-40, stop on mile marker 13. That's the last real place to get fast food for a while. At least choice wise.

Lastly, do NOT stop on mile marker 86 in Arkansas and eat at the Cici's Pizza. You will get sick. Also, the McDonalds on mile marker (hmmm), well, it's somewhere between 270 and 280 on I-40 in TN is terrible. Avoid that at all costs.

I also second the thought for stopping in the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma. The bouldering there is a blast! It's an all day affair, though.

what on tape? hahaha i kid i kid.....hey like the boys said there is sooo much to see right here in America, i've traveled this continent by thumb(hitchiked across 4 times) and driven twice, but i'm wanting to ride across america on the Harley. i understand about traveling with a brother instead, some younger ladies aren't into the history, landscape or the people here in the states. have fun while you are young and able.

Well, if I do I will be sure to bring a bow and arrow and leave the banjo at home.

oh yeah Tom. Definitely. I've definitely been stuck in a rut up here in Santa Maria...a beer would be good. Or 10. I'd like it to get your ass to NY for a visit...I still think you should just say "F IT!" and buy a ticket first...think of the consequences later. Its one of those cities you have just got to see.

Yeah, 10 sounds like a good number...

I should visit NY just to visit, I agree. Go check out some of those infamous clubs I always hear about... and some Jazz clubs, stuff like that...

I just have to make sure I can afford to go!

We talked a while back about Yosemite. Did you ever make it out? From now through the next few months would be the perfect time to visit.

Funny you should mention that...my gf and I were planning our Yosemite trip the other day. We will probably go the week after St. Pattys day. Thing is, she doesn't have a lot of interest in this sightseeing stuff. So, though I eventually make it to where I want to go, I wind up putting it off until I NEED to go and can use that in my favor. And, considering we are driving back to NY in about 2 months...we need to go now. So finally, she's down.

I think tomorrow we might go up to San Simeon and watch the seals hump on the beach.

Point being... I live in TN. The Ocoee, where part of it was filmed, is not that far from me. It's even closer to where Rick will be heading (Chattanooga). The "locals" they encounter when they first get to the river... where they try to find a driver... most of those folks weren't actors.

Those are my people. For better or worse...

... and I do play the banjo.
