EventDV Review of HMC150

Thanks for putting that together Mark. You've always been a helpful DVXuser. I thought the article was very comprehensive and liked how you started with your bass analogy. Equally important was your message to readers that you too had your doubts about the camera and also acknowledge it's not a perfect camera.

It's nice to see Panasonic get some representation in the wedding world which is overly flooded by shooters blindly following Sony. Also good to have such an influential person become hip to the Panny Mojo Club :)

Yes, thank you for the in-depth review. If I may ask, what shoulder mount are you using, and is this an important piece of gear for wedding and event videography?

Being a Sony guy myself and this being my first Panasonic, the article hit on many points with me.

Very well done.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your kind words. It was a lot of fun reviewing this camera.

Gymnut808. I started using a shoulder mount when I came to HD from shooting with a full size camera. I tried a monopod for stabilization, but I just felt too limited. I then tried the MultiRig Pro, and loved it. It gives me the stability and flexibility of a shoulder mount camera.

Is it important for wedding and event videography? That is up to personal preference. Some videographers prefer a monopod, but for me, the MultiRig is vital in getting steady shots at the reception when zoomed in at 100% for long periods of time.

I did a review of the MultiRig Pro and you can see it here.

Great review Mark, it touched on all the key features of this little beast. I have already begun pointing some of the doubters to your review!

Thanks for the review! HMC150 will definitely rise in popularity as they understand more about the camera's capabilities.

Nice review Mark,

I dont know if you were aware of this but you can set the focus ring to behave like the iris dial .
and it also has the EVF DTL that helps setup focus .

Nice review. I had to laugh though.

You wanted a snazzier battery charger?

And finally, the battery charger has a green light when charging. The light goes off when the battery is charged. For $3,200 I don't expect a fancy charger like the one Sony offers, but at least the Canon charger blinks at three different rates to let you know where you are in the charging process.

best

Hi Everts,

I realized the that you can set the focus ring to behave like the iris wheel, but I couldn't figure out why I would want to give up manual focus. Am I missing something?

I did mention about the EVF DTL and that advantage over the XH-A1 is that the Zebras still work on the HMC.

Hi David,

Yes, I would like a snazzier battery charger. At least one that would tell how much time is left until full charge or where they are in the charging process. I think the Sony and Canon chargers are sweet. I'm glad you found it entertaining. :) LOL

Ah thanks Mark. I'm trying to locate a Wedding/Event videographer here in the Bay area who's using 150s, that I can intern with, but this may be too new a camera for them to be using. I've found a few using A1's(which I just sold btw to pay for the 150). I have a CF monopod and tripod and agree with you that they can be somewhat limiting creatively.

I think this is more geared to the people with 35mm adapters, where once the focus is set, they don't need to mess with it anymore.

You are welcome. Are you a member of any of the local PVAs? Here are a couple of PVA s that I know of.

Hi Mike,

Okay, that makes perfect sense. I have never used a 35mm adapter. I tend to open up the iris and zoom in when I can, to get the narrow DoF, but it would be cool to have the narrow DoF without zooming in so much.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the links. No I am not a member, but am actually a film student at the Academy of Art. My area of interest lies in post-production, primarily editing, but the scope of my ambitions really only lie in Wedding & Event videography.

HI Mark
Thanks for the great review. I was wondering what kind of on board light you use with the HMC 150 and whether you like it?

Hi Mark,

How did you mount your on camera light to the HMC150 I see in the EventDV Review pic it looks like you mounted it on the handle.

thanks
