How to record to laptop?

First of, I like to know if I can record directly to a computer versus to the SxS card in my EX1. However, when I said record directly to a computer, I am not referring to the HDSDI port on the EX1. If so, will someone point me to a direction on how to do this? One more thing, will I lose quality if I'm not recording to the SxS card and not going through the HDSI port?

SxS card recording= 8 bit 4:2:0 LongGop. HDSDI live output= 10 bit 4:2:2 uncompressed.

Record from HDSDI output to capture card (and you do not say what computer, OS or NLE you are using so can't go any further there) and record uncompressed HD 10 bit directly to a raid.

You could stream SQ video via firewire, but why own an EX if you're only going to shoot 25mps footage (only reason I can see is to match HDV footage).

You could also take analog component HD output into a capture card. But if you're already taking output to capture card, why go analog when your card will not doubt also have SDI input.

Thanks for the response. I know that HDSI live out is the best quality but I'm not sure if firewire out will have the same quality as recording to the SxS card. Apparently it's not. Thanks!

So how do you record to a laptop using the Firewire output (HDV). I have FCP 6.0 on my laptop. I would then record to an external hard drive.

Anyone try this yet?

I need to record (document) and event that is happening all day on Monday. The quality isn't a big issue. I'm sure HDV will be more than adequate. Is there a trick to it though?

I believed yes. As long as the MBP has a HDSI input port to accept the signal from the HDSDI port on the EX1/EX3.

Don't think Apple has any of those ports on a MBP, certainly not the late 2008 version.
Certainly possible on the Macpro though.

Why not just go firewire out and record 1080i (HDV) to your laptop? Yeah, it's not 4:2:2 and all that, but you'd have basicly unlimited storage.

Another option is to buy a Convergent Designs Nano Flash and record HD-SDI 4:2:2 to that.

BTW, we have an AJA Io HD and we love it. But I haven't taken it out on a shoot yet.

How about the Matrox MXO2? It has an SDI input and can be driven by a MacbookPro via the included ExpressCard.

So no one has ever recorded using the firewire (iLink) output of this camera? (do I have to figure out everything myself for you guys?! hehehehe)

The firewire output spits out HDV. PerroneFord has done it, he uses a firestore with his EX1, but you can only get HDV out of it. The 35mbps mode does not go over the firewire.

Okay, I just found this out from a person who has a link to this video on Vemeo. What I gather so far is that he uses Blackmagic Design Intensity HDMI ingest card in a Magma Chassis Expressbox and recorded to his laptop.

BlackMagic Design Intensity card ($230) + Magma ExpressBox1 ($750) = $980

If it works, it's not a bad deal. I wonder how long does the power works on the ExpressBox1. How cumbersome is it to use?

I found this solution too. But maybe there will be some problems about the BlackMagic driver and the expressCard.
If it work, you really need a laptop with a Raid 0.

Why Raid 0 is required? I was reading the other thread and Barry mentioned that XDR and NanoFlash devices still only records at 8bit instead of 10bit. I wonder if by going through this rout, if it works, will it record at 10bit or 8bit? Does anyone know?
