How to record to laptop?

So how do you record to a laptop using the Firewire output (HDV). I have FCP 6.0 on my laptop. I would then record to an external hard drive.

Anyone try this yet?

I need to record (document) and event that is happening all day on Monday. The quality isn't a big issue. I'm sure HDV will be more than adequate. Is there a trick to it though?

I do this with the Panasonic HVX 200. I go firewire out from camera into my MPB with FCP running and onto my Esata drive running off the MBP.

Make sure you FCP settings are set to your codec and that you use "non-controllablr device".

More than the computer....

I have done it both ways with the the HVX200. Using the AJA you have to go in
as 422. Using firewire I go into FCP as DVC HD codec.

Sorry guys, have not used the Sony. But it should work pretty much the same way. You just have to make sure your codecs are set correctly in FCP.

Not into a laptop, but we've pulled 4:2:2 video right off the EX1 camera head by going with the RGB connections into an Intensity card in an Apple G5. With that set-up we can do live greenscreen chromakey in our studio. It's cool.
