OFFICIAL A1 Custom Presets thread

thanks Randy!

sorry for sending you all to vimeo and not just posting grabs...i guess i'd prefer you to see the presets in motion...i still have a lot to learn about focusing, but since i'm too run-n-gun for my own good, the shots don't always get their deserved attention. i really appreciate all of your feedback.

Chris

Hey guys here's a video I did recently, using two presets.

The outdoors stuff was using Panalook2

The indoor stuff was using Truecolor.

They have been my two favs. so far, one observation Truecolor crushes the blacks really well.

The picture quality isn't real great because I used H.264 800 bps pass in compressor, for whatever reason my Mac quit letting me make QT conversions, but you should still be able to get the idea.

Am I right when I say that all the presets in this topic are meant to be used for dramatic shooting and are less usefull for weddings and ENG stuff?
In my opinion the different examples I see are very nice in a dramatic way but far to dark for taping a wedding or ENG.

Panalook2 would work for a wedding nicely, it doesn't have the super crushing blacks, but I would agree most of these would be bad for weddings.

I would agree, if we had a very well lit example. But the lighting in that venue was absolutely terrible. So i don't know if you can make your judgment off of just that. It was so dark i couldn't even go into Manuel mode, i had to use Aperture Mode. I was actually happy with the way it turned out with such low light. But against all of the other presets those two were the most appealing out of all of the ones i had on my camera. But that's just my opinion. :)

What would you suggest for a wedding or ENG? Thanks

Panavision 2 would be a great preset for weddings. Give that a shot, much better in low light. If you need even more light, then you'll want to go to Normal Gamma.

Thanks for the info. I have a community shoot comming up next month on the 20th Feb that Im doing for free for some charity. Its a stage production so the lighting should be sufficient. Im not to mad about Panalook2 and prefer Panalook. PaPa, would you recommend Panvison 2 for this shoot? Also, I want to shoot this in 25F - is it safe to use shutter at 25 as it always defaults to this speed and Ive read in these forums that one should use 50 in PAL country ? Thanks

Panalook2 will definitely not have the same quality as Panalook because of the gamma curve, but what you gain is some sensitivity. It's a question of tradeoff.

If you want to shoot at 1/25th of a second to gain some light, then go for it, as long as you don't mind the motion blur.

For fun can some one make post some "Underworld/ The Ring" presets, not exact copies, but some interesting zero post production clean images? (Trying to avoid pixel heavy black spots in the blacks). I referenced the films above, but like I said they don't need to be exactly like them by any means, I don't want to stifle creativity.

custom preset BitBlack is great for black, and leaves colors very tweakable. it's designed more for magic Bullet CCs and such, but it looks very nice on it's own.

...look it up on Vimeo for some great examples
