Short film. Let the cutting down begin!

really enjoyed this. yeah, the age thing will always pop up...and i guess it's not relevant to the discussion, but i always wondered how you young guys aquire these fine instruments...i don't remember ever having money until i was well out of college haha

Well actually i am in college, in my second year now. Alot of it was grant money. Since i am married with a kid i get a little bit more and then from work i saved up some money too. I work at a graphics company here. I do the commercials and videography stuff here in town as well as some web graphics and banners. I get decent pay compared the average 17 year old in America i guess. I honestly am not trying to make myself sound arrogant at all. Really. But as to being able to afford this stuff, my last project was paying me $20 an hour for a 3 day project. I get projects like that quite a bit so sometimes i can afford some new toys to add in the toy box. Like i said SOMETIMES.

Well, I'm not in college, but I have had similar experience. I got my FCP certification last year and I have been doing busy editing work to make some money to buy new toys. Photo montages pay very well.

Whoa dude, you're only 17, already in college and married with children. I can't imagine that at that age. At that age I just smoked cigarettes, pot, and hung out at the local diner with my friends drinking coffee.

Well, good to get started on video and film at an early age. Back then I couldn't even imagine I'd ever have quality equipment like an A1 for the price it is. We had Super VHS and Hi8 camcorders or you could go the expensive route of Super 8mm or 16mm film. Then NLE post was not even really available unless you had access to a TV station or where in the industry and could use an Avid.

Well dude, i have been attempting to make films since i was about 8 or 9. I was using VHS cameras (the huge shoulder mount ones) and then moved onto Hi8 haha. The HDV (Hv20) and then my A1 now.

Yeah, I did some stuff on the old school equipment too. Mostly just really short stop motion animation with one of my friends. I had an 8mm Sony handycam that I would just record one second at a time because you couldn't do one frame at a time. We would do everything in camera even the music. A small stereo would be off camera playing some punk rock or some form of dark and bizarre music like Skinny Puppy. The music would be all cut up but it gave the soundtrack an original and surreal effect that we liked, and made it harder to distinguish the actual song. No one could figure out he music we used. Fun stuff. I wish I knew where those old tapes were.

I did one where I took a Star Trek TNG poster and cut out the head of Captain Picard, posted it on a poster board with a cartoony sky background and had Picard spew silly puddy goo all over the cartoon city below. I even impersonated his voice.

haha dude if you ever find those tapes, somehow upload them haha. Especially the Star Trek one haha. My first film was a mockery of a japanese film, I did the whole movie backwards, so jumping up walls and fly off the ground from your back was pretty much the main highlights, as well as crappy fighting choreography. Then after that remade night at the roxbury scenes and fake trailers for movies. Good times.

Yeah, I've tried to remake trailers too. I wasn't too into it but a friend who was a Jim Carrey fanatic wanted to recreate the Cable Guy trailer and a few scenes from the film. So naturally I played the Matthew Broderick part while he was Carrey.

I think the tapes are gone. I've looked for them many times but to no avail. It is probably better imagined or remembered than actually seen again. The Star Trek one was the last animation one I ever did. It was actually titled The Big Bear Disaster as the premise was a giant bear was wreaking havoc on the city. I vaguely remember that Picard/Patrick Stewart's head was God, the only one who could stop the big bear. It was the most epic and ambitious of all the stop motion shorts I did. Might as well go out with a bang.

Co-signed, except minus the cigs and pot. And no coffee, just soda.

Not that my friends and I weren't unmotivated, oh, we were incredibly unmotivated, but purchasing quality video gear just wasn't a viable option circa 1990. ($$)

24p technology and affordable non-linnear editing has opened up a world of possibilities for the youth of today.

Sorry to drift off topic from Ryan's film.

Yeah, same here for the video gear. I shot my first serious live action film a year before the DVX was announced. I remember thinking, 24 fps, how can they even do that on a video camera. I had no idea the revolution that the old DVX would cause.

Yeah, we're way off topic. Ryan has great talent for his age. If he keeps it up, I can't imagine what he'll be capable of in only another year or two. He should be able to go places in this crazy world we call the film industry. Good luck Ryan. Keep up the filmmaking and show us some more work.

Nice work!

Nice work!

Hey Ryan, I've been watching your stuff since you first posted on HV20.com. Its really cool to see your skills grow and get better. I dig this short. Had me hooked the whole time. I wish I had your skills when I was 17. Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

Oh and some quicky tech question- I'm curious at what aperture you had the nikon at most of the time and also what mic did you use?

Thank you! It's cool to know someone from hv20.com i feel like i know no one here but slowly making friends.

My nikon lens was at 2 the whole time. and the mic i used was the video rode mic. They dialogue got messed up because i was using the wrong settings. People said the video rode mic wouldn't work on a A1 but all you have to do is place the bottom of it in the mic holder on the camera. haha who ever knew?
My shutter settings were on 1/24. Pretty basic settings i suppose. :)

1/24? i saw someone post a while back about a possible "soft focus" issue...when shooting 24F, wouldn't 1/48 have worked better?...just curious. certainly motion becomes an issue at 1/24.

hmm your right. I could've sworn my settings was on 24 but possibly it was 48. Let me check...yup it was 24...so if i have it 48 will it have a sharper image?..

Nice work! I enjoyed this.
You wrote and directed it.... what did your crew do? Who shot it?
You as well?

Good moments, I liked the length and wouldn't cut much at all. The sound is the only weak area. Nice job! This worked quite well.

Did I read that right that you only used one lens? Shows how versatile a 50 can be in the right hands.

haha yeah one lens. I can't afford more yet..
Other than getting macro shots i kind of don't see the point in getting
all the fancy lenses but then again i haven't used other lenses haha.

Thanks Michael.
I wrote, directed, camera work, editing, scoring, pretty much everything. Besides the cast in the film my crew just helped me carry my dolly, tripod, and crane. That's pretty much it. And watched the set..haha.
The sound was rough. Not much of an audio technician at all.haha i should really practice that though.
Thanks man.
I thought i was going to get torn up here at dvxuser.
thanks to everyone who has commented and critiques. I highly appreciate it!
Seriously guys thanks.

Cool. I saw your stuff on the HV20 forum a while back. Glad you are still working your craft before tackling a big Feature. Keep at it.

One last question, how did you get the location? Know the manager or something?

I actually just asked the attendants there and once i got their acceptance i set a scheduled day and time period. I don't think they ran it by management but as long as they didn't get in trouble and i got the film done, i'm okay with that :)
