D90 Stair-Stepping Removal

I thought about that.. even making it so there isn't several malloc()/free() calls per frame (using the same 2 buffers over and over). Would be pretty easy and not break the prettiness of the code. :^)

But I'm pretty sure the throughput is limited mainly by ffmpeg decoding and encoding, and the operating system throttling the pipe transfers, so I decided to leave my code pretty. If I do ffmpeg ...blahblah... | d90trans > /dev/null, it goes about 10x faster than it does when I'm also encoding the output.

I'm just hoping someone will point me to a good intermediate video format to convert into that cinelerra can handle that doesn't take up huge amounts of space.

what's wrong with mjpeg? just increase the quality a bit. i'm sure there's a sweetspot where reëncoded (thanks for that spelling) mjpeg has the same quality as the original, slightly above the original quality. otherwise maybe huffyuv?

i changed the b to 50000k and the bt to 10000k and that gives me a file that's slightly bigger than the original and looks pretty much the same, without the stairstepping of course. i also removed the b and bt altogether and didn't see any difference, the bitrate becomes 16kbit compared to 10 for the original. i guess it's some default that kicks in. it renders in almost exactly realtime on my 2.8 ghz imac, 1m 42s for 1m 48s of material. (so yes, it works well in mac os cli as well, not just linux)

Is there a "noob" proof method to get clean, non-jagged video via post production?

I'm a noob at using Sony Vegas Pro, but I mainly use Windows Movie Maker...

I mainly bought the camera for Photography, but I also want to exploit the video capabilities since they're there for me to use.

I've already manged to learn Kholis method of noise free video with the AE-Lock trick, I'm willing to learn lots more from you pros.

Nihilus, Matt, everyone here -

great work on those scripts!

What would be even crazier would be to reverse engineer the firmware and make the camera just not throw away every 9th line and output the video in 800px height. :)

cheers ;)

Hi,
I've been trying to use the AviSynth scripts posted here without success. In VirtualDub, an error pops up:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format YV12(unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs such as those used by Windows Media Player are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video."

It seems to be a codec problem but I'm not sure which one I need to install...

picvideo, morgan, anything that has mjpeg in the name. there was a link to a free trial version here a while ago.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the reply. Cgipro's script seems to be working right now but when I try the one you posted here, it still gives me an error. I'm not sure if cgipro updated his script with the improvements you made in yours so that's why I wanted to try it. Also, is there a script that applies Lee's method? Isn't it supposed to be the best method? I don't know AE enough to create the project in a timely fashion. I'm really looking for the easiest but best way to clean my footage ;)

Thanks...

my script is for fcp, so i'm not surprised if it gives you an error in ae. :-) my script is an exact implementation of lee's method, so is the avi-synth script and the c-program for ffmpeg.

Oops, sorry about that. I was talking about hdkhang's script. Also, I just realized that cgipro's script was based on Lee's method and not Halsu's as I previously thought.

In your FCP script, You seem to have found a way to expand the files to 1080 instead of cutting them back to 720. Would you know how to do that with cgipro's script?...or would it be the same as leaving them at 800 and using something like InstantHD to expand it to 1080?

Yes, I simply scale it up from 800p using fcp's bicubic interpolation. Instant hd might do a slightly better job. Try it. /matt

timv, i saw your message before you deleted it. my point is that all the solutions in this thread were developed by people in this thread, so feel free to develop your own. :-) i'm sure vegas has layers and cropping masks so maybe the after effects method can be used?

Something is not clear to me:
If the stair-stepping removal method only works on an original D90 file how come you guys talk about doing it after editing. I thought that I had to do it for every single footage before editing because of the compression added by the editing software. Isn't that the case?

you don't have to compress the files prior to editing on most systems so the problem doesn't really exist, but if you do this anyway compression doesn't mess with the image structure as long as you don't change the size. the removal has to be done before you apply any filters or effects that change the geometry of the image, i.e. scaling, squeezing, pan and scan.

Thanks...That would make things easier for me but I saw some post from Premiere Pro users stating that Lee's method doesn't work after the editing process. That made things a bit confusing. Since Premiere seems to work in real ltime with the CanopusHQ codec, I guess it should work on my edited file. I just didn't want to do all this work and then not be able to use this method.
