SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

That "partially functioning beta cam" was fine for Soderbergh's $70 million CHE films.

RED isn't trying to be Sony or Panasonic, that's the point.

Yes, w/Red's assistance Soderbergh was able to work around the many problems of the early cameras. The early Red Ones were officially released as Betas w/Beta firmware (no on-board audio, only one output can be active at a time, no on-board playback, etc.,.). I didn't say Red was trying to act like Sony or Panasonic. I said if Sony and Panasonic acted like Red they'd be tarred and feathered. It's a testament to Jim Jannard's vision and determination to take on a task like this and a testament to his charisma that he can simultaneously promise everything and nothing and most people are okay w/that. Like I said before being different can be good and being different can be bad. I don't think it's fair to fixate or ignore either aspect of the company or their products. Red is what it is.

. Show me a company that will give you full credit on a camera when you upgrade. Will Sony give you full credit for your EX1 when you purchase EX3... I think your diatribe should be directed at someone else.

I've got a love/hate thing with RED. We had money tied up with them for 6 months and when our number came up, that's when they announced "No more waits on Red One". Great. A week later they released the new modular system. I was one of the morons on line at 4am Nov 13th watching press releases. Yes, if we'd pulled the trigger on R1, we could get full credit on an upgrade, but uh oh, that upgrade is on a $28,000 camera and not all the R1 accessories are compatible. Spec wise, the Scarlet 35 is an upgrade over R1 and fits our requirement much better than Epic which is overkill. But there's no trade in value on Scarlet, just 12% off and in our case, spot number 5,000 in line at Red. So from our pov, and all the Red owners wanting Scarlet not Epic, the trade in deal is no deal at all. So I question this supposed benevolence of the upgrade program. And if you go to Reduser you'll see others express similar sentiment. And now a new date when "Everything will change".

In the end, it R1 didn't makes sense for several reasons so we decided our current set up is good enough, besides, the economy is tanking, one of our deals seems to have fallen through, and as someone who studied the classics, and appreciates the contributions of the likes of Socrates and Euripides, maybe will wait it out for the forthcoming "Otis Camera", The O-Cam? from Athens.

In 2012, anything is possible.
Too bad civilisation as we know it is going to end in 2012 (as predicted by the Mayans)... All RED owners will be using their cameras as clubs to fight off the barbaric savages attacking their homesteads. Hmmm, I wonder what the weight of that 28k full-package set up will be... maybe I will buy one for self defence!

...

I think that biggest pain for Red is their really huge target group with avalanche of contradictory posts after each announcments. It must be quite streesfull to create somethig under that pressure of unexpected reactions, but instant feedback with different ideas and needs is very motivating too (and it's almost free :))

He he since I wrote it Jim already posted this:

"This interaction with the community has been invaluable. While we have to filter out some of the "we want it all and we want it now" posts, the program is better for your suggestions and us learning to listen. The more we know about what we can (and can't) do, the easier it is to listen. In the beginning, we had to ignore a bunch because we had no way to do it. Lots of great ideas, no roadmap to get them done. Things are different now."

Who cares about the marketing? The end product is what counts and the Red One is a testament of what Red Digital Cinema can deliver. No other company has been as open to its customers as Red and I dont think its a bad thing. I think part of the ever evolving Scarlet is that the market is changing and they actually are listening to what we want. Wow.. a noble idea. I am just curious, what is it about Red's marketing that has gotten you so bent out of shape.

Well the discussion took a turn towards the marketing policy of the company, because of its brazen sensationalism and fan boy fanning. Its making these cameras the 'hottest toys this xmas' rather than the professional tools there supposed to be.

Call me a cynic, but 'anything that calls itself revolutionary ain't Che Guevara'

Now, the 'at least there trying argument' is fine, i commend them for that as one businessman to another, but there not doing this to get to heaven, there a company like any other, and can be critisised for irresponsible marketing just like any other.

It's not a comment on the quality of their equipment, but the issues some have had does call into question the build quality and the reliability of Red to meet its own deadlines and project goals. Neither are such concerns dismissed just because this or that celebrity/director has used it - for that was the exact reason they were invited too (for promotional purposes) in the first place.

so another sensational advert or announcement does nothing to ratify such concerns, a good solid and well supported product does. A reputation based on that and word of mouth will do far more than fan boy aimed adverts with glossy claims and cheesy antics! We'll wait and see!

I want Red to be a success as i want what it could deliver at that price range, but the electronic titans wouldn't have missed such an easy product to develop for sake of monopolising its own standards. To believe that is to wave your Red banner for the digital revolution to come... *ahem*

I think your taken this way to seriously. "Brazen sensationlism".... Is it that brazen or is it a bunch guys excited about what they are doing and trying to excite its supporters. We are all adults here and I tend to gloss over most of what Red says until I actually have a product in hand. However, if you can't get excited about the latest toy to hit the market, then I think your in the wrong business. Its suppose to be fun and yes professional.

You lost me here. So I take your no Che fan or was it a bad attempt at humor.

Sure you can critcize and no one said they are not savvy businessmen. Hell...Jim is a billionaire so I am quite sure he knows all the marketing tricks in the game. You lost me however on "irresponsible marketing". You keep labeling them with this malice intent and I don't see it. I think their openess should be applauded and not demonized.

I urge you to go on to reduser and see the complaints from Red One owners and read Red's response. No one said this camera is perfect and working with Red Raw has it hurdles but I don't think you will find another company more responsive to customer concerns. Again, no one said you have to love the company b/c Peter Jackson or Soderbergh gives their stamp of approval and there are top pros using Red cameras that were not brought on for promotional purposes as you suggested.

Exactly my point. My conclusion about Red is solely based on the Red One. It has been overwhelming success and I don't think I am overstating it. Yes there are issues but we can't have everything. If the Red One had failed...guess what...there would not be a Scarlet or Epic so word of mouth has been positive for Red.

I want Red to be a success as i want what it could deliver at that price range, but the electronic titans wouldn't have missed such an easy product to develop for sake of monopolising its own standards. To believe that is to wave your Red banner for the digital revolution to come... *ahem*

A little incoherent here, please clarify.

Um im not taking it seriously im just stating how i see it... many have ;) If you think I am, then you must be reading my post in the wrong tone of voice. Try reading it with the voice of a kindly old man, one who could almost be your grandad, and imagine him sitting on a park bench in the midst of Spring.

Also quoting 6... SIX extracts of my last post (I should be flattered) is probably taking things too seriously! In fact I always imagine the poor guy copying and pasting copying and pasting bits and bops of anothers post... point by point attempts at rebuttal - exhausting!

I know you disgree with me, and have the point of view that Red has done amazing things, and that their marketing is simply interactive with its fanbase and has no malicious intent, that the rumours of technical difficulties are greatly exaggerated etc etc. Thats the jist... I can guess that before reading your opus critique on my last post ;) Its all your opinion and its your right to have it, but please, oh please try not to make presumptions on my er emotional state of mind and or how serious i am with my opinions. Im a guy eating vast quantities of chocolate and diet pepsi casting a glance on and off the horrible russian movie 'Come and See' hehe, not sitting passionately worrying about this er issue with Red ;)

Yes.. so exhausting.... I think I need nap now. BTW, the seriously comment was not meant to say this issue runs your life nor do clever comebacks make me adhere to your argument. Just for the record...I dont think Jim Jannard is the messiah....I know you were wondering.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) Nevertheless, have fun on your soapbox b/c I am done with this chapter.

I too was hoping for nikon camcorder, but its not gonna happened anytime soon. Like I said before (a few pages back), here is the main Nikon's "BIG Announcement" Dec 1st.

Feh, D3X? That is of no interest to us. I bought a D300 and it will be my still camera for the next few years, I think for anyone less than a working pro who can pay for it in a couple of shoots, this camera is a waste of time. Nice camera but overkill.

Come on Nikon, build us a RED competitor.

Man, everything seemed so promising within the last month-and-a-half to two months. First the D90, then the 5D mkII, and next the big Scarlet / Epic announcement. Now, this Nikon announcement, which I'm sure is great for photographers with big wallets, but not for most of us here. We still have the Scarlet / Epic re-announcement in a few days and NAB 09.

2 THINGS I DO KNOW:

1) Looks like the 35mm DOF adapter companies won't suddenly be going out of business like some have predicted.

2) My Canon XH-A1 will be probably be sticking around for quite a while longer than I originally predicted.

I wouldn't sweat it, I have seen some kick ass footage from a A1, it is the sweetest of the HDV camcorders as far as I am concerned. I like it much better than the XL-H1. I have shot with the XL-H1 and hated it.
