I did the update throught the apple site but when I go to "About Final Cut Pro" within the program it still says version 5.1

Is it suppossed to say 5.1.2?

The splash screen when launching FCP should read 5.1.2, and the "About FCP" should also read 5.1.2. Run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on your system drive. And then use "FCP Rescue" to trash your prefs.

Did you download the stand-alone updater, or did you run Software Update from your Apple menu? Software Update is the preferred method.

You may have "hooked" a big one here, but here goes....What might "FCP rescue" be? I usually just go in and trash the preferences. This is the first I've ever heard of it.

You just go in and trash the preferences? What files? Are you getting all of them?

Do a web search, it's a really neat little app that makes sure to get all the files FCP uses for prefs. In fact, Apple's never published the list of files for 5.1, and they changed from 4.5 to 5.0. FCP Rescue 5 is just easy, fast, and when FCP is running well, you can make a back up, so you don't lose any Favorites or customizations.

I'm going to search for that today for sure, thanks for the tip.

I figured out what was wrong.

I copied the icon from applications and have been running FCP from that icon which is actually like a virtual 2nd copy of FCP on the system. Everytime I ran the update it was updating the original FCP app that was installed so it was working properly there, just not on the copied virtual app. I'm such a PC guy, lol.

I searched the Apple site and googled "FCP Rescue" and didn't come up with a place to download it.

Is this product still available? If so from where? Does it still work with 5.1.2?

Everyone who has mentioned this utility has great things to say about it and I would like to check it out.

Sorry, if you search for FCP Rescue it comes up immediately but for me the download link at macupdate was broken. If you find yourself in the same situation you can also download it from here: http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/

Looks simple enough to use, I'm new to FCP and this whole trashing your preference things a bit strange. So should I backup my FCP preference file now [I haven't really changed much from the default yet] how easy is it to erstore from that backup?

Yes, once FCP is running fine, there is GREAT reason to back up your pref files. All the filter pack and motion favorites you save are gone when you trash prefs. All you customizing, it's all just gone. So, you back up when things are good. Then when FCP goes sour, you trash, then restore.

I have tons of stuff in my Favorites bin. I lose all that, I lose a major amount of productivity. Everytime you trash prefs, everything in your Favorites goes away, wihtout a back up.

I just realized something, the CrossGrade disks will only give you 5.1. You have to run Software Update after that to get to 5.1.2.
