I figured it was a little better than saying: "we're broke" :-D.
Seriously though, I do try to keep budgets to a minimum although I have recently started to spend more on costumes and props. We had our first taste of set design on "Blood & Coffee" and we're thinking of doing the same thing with this piece.
Winter has come to Toronto so most of our shots are going to be indoor, like say 99% of them. That leaves us the opportunity to actually build the main set piece of THE BEDROOM and actually design it so it's got everything that is needed for production, including some of the more practical effects.
I've been making a few tentative inquiries about using part of a warehouse to build the set, but I suspect that search is going to take a bit of a while. In the meantime we're also putting out feelers for use of a large bedroom with high ceilings, a loft even, and maybe the cost of renting that (please borrow) will be less than renting/borrowing a warehouse space and building the set.
Worst case scenario that I've been kicking around is trying to kill 2 birds with one stone and come up with a concept for a music video that will use the same set. That way it will help to defray some of the actual expense. One project facilitates the other, but that's a bit of a long shot. As it is I still have to finalize some of my upcoming projects.
Still, the notion of getting exactly the image, or set that I see in my mind, exactly like I see it, instead of having to depend on how the actual location looks... well that's an attractive notion, one that may tip the balance toward me actually spending money on seriosu set design. We'll jus thave to see how that one goes...
