I would have considered shooting from inside the cage, this would let you do two things 1) you could be meaner, I could tell you were holding back a bit. 2) might have a nice symetry since you shoot from inside your cage at the end. Then I would cut shooting from inside the dog cage with very tight closeups of the dog and more scared or aggressive sound fX.
Great advice here. A shot from the dogs POV would have really helped you out in more ways than one.

Cheers,

Mike

Jack, ironically enough that thought had dawned on me earlier today but actually reading it now from you makes it all the more clear what a good idea that could have been. You're advice also has a lot more detail then my "oh man! what if I had shot it from inside the cage?"

Not having to hold back would have really upped the anty on making the kid appear animalistic and give him that extra monster-like quality, could have really explored a darker character. The idea of the symmetry between the two would have been excellent and helped to establish more, hadn't even crossed my mind.

Mike, thanks again for your input, always appreciate it. I get exactly what you guys are saying. Next go around I'll try to organize myself better, thanks for all the help.:)

V.O. was a little painful in the mix - sounds like it's really boosted in the 3 - 4 K range? Maybe you were going for a vintage V.O., but stings a bit.

I was definitely going for vintage but I'm not great with audio so I understand how it might have stung. Gotta try regardless of the outcome in order to learn.

Any suggestions on fixing that up though to make it less painful?
Jack your advice is pure gold. Thanks a million:beer:

Good film for being put together with not much time left. The audio could use some work and I was not a fan of actually harassing the dog, earlier posts definitely gave you some good alternatives for that next time. I liked the choice to go black and white though.

Glad you were able to get something together for the fest. It would have been cool if we could have been given a little bit more info about how the tables were turned on the main character. The black and white worked, especially with the stark walls of his prison. Made him pop some. Be careful of too many super tight shots close together because it can be a little disorienting to the audience. Good job!

Carrying on the tradition from Timefest, the AIM sessions have returned, a live stream of whatever may come out of our heads as we watch your films. Here are Ben Sliker and Brad Mates thoughts on "CAGED."

spesliker (9:47:00 PM): CAGED
spesliker (9:47:06 PM): rdy?
TheBrad84 (9:47:11 PM): yes
spesliker (9:47:13 PM): 3
spesliker (9:47:14 PM): 2
spesliker (9:47:15 PM): 1
spesliker (9:47:16 PM): go
spesliker (9:48:12 PM): ouch VO
TheBrad84 (9:48:16 PM): someone finally used twilight zone.....but ripped it straight off
spesliker (9:48:32 PM): they must have missed the memo.
spesliker (9:48:50 PM): BITE HIM
TheBrad84 (9:48:54 PM): by the way...YOU'RE A F*CKING DOG
spesliker (9:49:08 PM): lol
spesliker (9:49:17 PM): it'll be hard for me to find that SNL pic.
TheBrad84 (9:49:31 PM): im sure its on hulu

spesliker (9:49:32 PM): i bet this guys ends up in a cage
spesliker (9:49:43 PM): OH I WAS RIGHT
TheBrad84 (9:49:44 PM): nah...that would be too predictable
spesliker (9:49:58 PM): the dog gets to talk shi* to him now.
TheBrad84 (9:50:00 PM): lol
TheBrad84 (9:50:15 PM): I HATE HUMANS. YOU'RE JUST A STUPID HUMAN. YOU PLAY WITH YOUR BALL BOY
spesliker (9:50:44 PM): the compression is heinous on this.
TheBrad84 (9:50:54 PM): i think people should pay us royalties for using bouncing balls of the wall shots. we clearly did it first in dead inside
spesliker (9:51:07 PM): apparently it only took him a few minutes to completely forget he was human, and stuff food in his mouth with his hands
TheBrad84 (9:51:18 PM): well he was kinda stupid...
spesliker (9:51:58 PM): if this was an eye for an eye story ... they totally screwed him on cage type.
spesliker (9:52:30 PM): the narrator was completely unnecessary.
TheBrad84 (9:52:40 PM): yes.
spesliker (9:52:45 PM): I'M GOING TO TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE SEEING RIGHT NOW
spesliker (9:53:03 PM): not to mention ruin any surprise in the beginning
spesliker (9:53:32 PM): i get that it was a "homage" but it ruined the story.
spesliker (9:53:49 PM): thoughts?
TheBrad84 (9:53:53 PM): um
TheBrad84 (9:54:28 PM): no

Loved the concept for this piece, but it was so predictable that it really ruined any sort of surprise. we were just waiting for what we knew was going to happen. Part of this is in the VO in the front and end of the piece, just get rid of it. (IMHO) Also work on your compression techniques, cause it was a little rough to watch the way it was delivered. Keep rocking, look forward to seeing more in the future fests.

The picture of Will Ferrell yelling at the dog is priceless I appreciate you adding it or I would have had no idea what you were talking about. Just watched that skit, funny stuff.

The AIM session was well worth the wait, thanks Ben:)!
