FRAGMENT by Mile Božičević

Thanks neosnare, as I actually want to be an editor one day, I found those critics very encouraging.

leeteci-Well, I did that story because I found it twilightish. I put an explanation in my previous post about what exactly happened back there, so drugs and alcohol are actually just a part of her insanity-NOT the cause of what happened later on. And the story itself, well, it IS hard, but not because of losing the child (as that didn't actually happened) but more because the of the loneliness, terrible loneliness that sometimes destroys the humans, even though they maybe didn't deserve it-at least that's my point of view. : )

Pauly that is one big compliment coming from you, I'm really glad you liked it. Not everyone likes that quick-cuts, but I'm glad most of you (or all till now:P) liked it.

Thanks a lot, gives me the feedback to do more stuff in the future!

Impressive. Really liked the editing and the music. Your actress was very good, and she did a good job of showing a descent into madness. I think the electronic type fx at the end were not necessary, but it was an original idea. I'm a big fan of Repulsion so I guess I'm partial to crazy lady movies.
Great job!

Hmhm..

Well.. I thought that movie should be self-explanationary.. It was just impossible to see those elements just by watching your movie..

When I went to cinema, I don't read the synopsis or script first, therefore I could understand the movie..

Ok, maybe it is just me..

The film from Est Europe have often this heavy melancholy atmosphere. This is very authentic and I like it. The score works very well on this story. What I didn't like is the filter of strokes to show that she is caged.
I am very pleased that there is a film from this part of Europe in the fest. Thank you! :)

Susanne

I agree that this film has a heavy atmosphere. I can't say I really enjoyed it, it was a bit artsy for my tastes. I liked the jump cuts though; I thought that was pulled off very well. And I liked the sneaker bouncing across the road after the collision. Some interesting visuals, but the film on the whole didn't do it for me. I think that's a matter of personal taste more than anything.

Wow...quite intense. I enjoyed your film Mile and I think you made some bold choices which worked out for it. There were some crazy visuals and jump cuts that all worked very well to serve the purpose of the story. The actress did a good job as well to really evoke that sense of creeping insanity.

The ONLY thing that I didn't care for was the score. In of itself, the music was very appropriate for the piece but it seemed like that one part looped forever and it started to get to me. Other than that, I think you've got a very creative and original film here Mile. Great job!

story flowed well, altho a bit cliche to me. really didn't like the black titles cutting in after the story started. some good makeup/actions by the actress near the end.

good film although not my taste. surreal.

actress did a great job going nuts. dont know what happened to her, i guess her daughter was killed by a car, or maybe that girl was her as a kid and she's lost that kid part of herself? don't know. without giving me more to know the lead by unfortunately i didnt care that much either. great screams though, thats for sure.

Congratulations on doing a more experimental film. Some things worked I think, and some didn't. Above all the editing was interesting - the jump cuts were good and helped this intense feeling you had throughout. Lighting a bit mediocre and I didn't like the filter at the end. The sound came and went and needed some work.

hoz I agree with you, and I missed a lot of footage so that viewers could learn more about main actress and her relationship with young girl. Thanks for pointing that out.

Horncastle (lol, your nick is funny ), thanks for your comments, glad you liked the editing part. I think lighting was terrible, because the battery of freezolight died (Murphy's law) and we were improvising big time, plus I tried to improve lighting differences and overexposed areas in post production; I'm not sure how that turned out. In short, I think lighting was terrible, as stated. : )

Thanks again.

Hey,

Just caught the piece. I liked what you were doing in it. The fragmented nature of the narrative was an interesting twist and I enjoyed the surreal nature of this piece. The stuff that happens after she finishes the pills was great. The moment in the bathroom was awesome. Not sure I liked what you did to the footage but her in the outfit we've seen earlier in the mirror is very nice and worked really well.

I thought the set-up with the two people in the park worked. Cutting between them and the credits helps get us into the mindset of the piece as well as sets up the film. Not sure we needed more after that but I liked the way you set this piece up.

I felt the story lacked the time it needed. Not much going on yet you used the whole six mintures. Even fragmented it seemed to take a long time for being someone thinking back to the child she lost. But maybe that's me.

But a good effort and I enjoyed it. Can't wait to see more. Thanks for sharing and congrats on getting a piece in.

Carrying on the tradition from Timefest, the AIM sessions have returned, a live stream of whatever may come out of our heads as we watch your films. Here are Ben Sliker and Brad Mates thoughts on "FRAGMENT."

spesliker (9:22:54 PM): FRAGMENT?
spesliker (9:22:58 PM): no?
TheBrad84 (9:23:02 PM): sure
spesliker (9:23:18 PM): i just became french there apparently
spesliker (9:23:23 PM): rdy?
TheBrad84 (9:23:25 PM): yea
spesliker (9:23:28 PM): 3
spesliker (9:23:29 PM): 2
spesliker (9:23:30 PM): 1
spesliker (9:23:31 PM): go
TheBrad84 (9:23:49 PM): yikes
spesliker (9:23:57 PM): holy shi* that was disturbing
spesliker (9:24:10 PM): did the mime touch you here?
spesliker (9:24:13 PM): how about here? LINK
spesliker (9:25:06 PM): i swear to god there are more clocks in this fest than timefest.
spesliker (9:25:46 PM): apparently this guy's editing style was to just take out ever 10th frame
TheBrad84 (9:26:06 PM): this film was probably about something else but then it went over the time limit so they decided to do this
TheBrad84 (9:26:32 PM): car 1 girl 0
TheBrad84 (9:26:43 PM): tahts what you get for playing with crazy mimes
spesliker (9:26:44 PM): the shoe escaped
spesliker (9:26:53 PM): i was concerned about the shoe.
TheBrad84 (9:27:14 PM): booze in the morning. i like this girl
TheBrad84 (9:27:49 PM): but if you are that out of control...would you pour shots...wouldnt you just drink straight out of the bottle?
spesliker (9:28:06 PM): she's keeping count
spesliker (9:28:18 PM): 20 shots and 20 pills = death.
spesliker (9:28:26 PM): MIME DEATH.
TheBrad84 (9:28:39 PM): MIMALITY!!
spesliker (9:29:12 PM): for all of you out there that don't understand brad's words ... that's a mime fatality.
TheBrad84 (9:29:23 PM): in a mortal kombat context
spesliker (9:29:28 PM): of course
spesliker (9:29:47 PM): hopefully this guy had an import copy of mortal kombat, so he knows what we are talking about.
TheBrad84 (9:29:56 PM): lesson of fragment = mimes are bad
TheBrad84 (9:30:37 PM): and if you act like a mime your children will die horrible deaths and you will go insane
TheBrad84 (9:30:53 PM): a worthy message
spesliker (9:31:10 PM): he gets a bonus star for the anti-mime PSA
spesliker (9:31:59 PM): thoughts?
spesliker (9:32:32 PM): the jumpy edits were overused and they lost their effect very quickly for me.
TheBrad84 (9:32:38 PM): ya
spesliker (9:33:02 PM): anything else?
TheBrad84 (9:33:12 PM): nope
spesliker (9:33:15 PM): ok

This film had a creepy vibe that I dug, i don't know if that was the intent, but there definitely was a feeling that something was just "off" the whole time. I really disliked the editing style, it lost its effect very quickly and became annoying for me. There's a lot of ways to truncate time in an edit. I'd suggest to just shoot the important parts of the scene instead of shooting everything she would do and making it choppy like that. I love the feel of the non-USA entries, they are always so different than the american films. cheers.

Wow, I'm glad to see Croatian film over here... Do you plan on making another one for the LossFest?
I will try to make my (first) film for this fest, so it would be cool to have two exyu films here.

LOL, there's a couple of guys from Slovenia on these boards to, leteeci and others I think. They did The Pain Container, it's quite entertaining.

Yes, I'm planning to go on Loss Fest too, but this time I'll try to do it in a different way. You learn a lot while watching all these shorts, so I think the next one will be a couple of steps above Fragment.

Don't try to make the film-make it. You'll never be overjoyed with the final result anyway.:)
And it's kinda funny we communicate on english not our native language lol.

Let me know if you need something, I'll do my best though I'm far from expert.
