My 32 Gig P2 Card is Dead in the Water

I went to do some time lapse shots a few days ago and my 32 Gig card came up with a "card unsupported" error when it was inserted in the HVX. I tried to format it in-camera...no dice. Camera won't recognized it.

So I then tried to access it through my Macbook Pro and Duel Adapter with P2 Genie, P2Log Pro, and Shotput P2...nothing. The Macbook doesn't see it.

I then tried to access it through my Dell Laptop with various Panasonic downloadable programs for troubleshooting the card. Nothing...Again, nothing recognizes the card.

I bought this 32 Gig card about 7 months ago and have only used it on a handful of shoots. It's never been dropped, never been exposed to magnetism...it's been babied like the rest of my gear.

Anyone have a thought or solution...something to try? Anyone know the warranty for the P2 cards through Panasonic?? I called Panasonic tech support tonight and opened a ticket on it, but they're not back in the office until Monday.

The card was working perfectly up until when I went to use it last Sunday. I've been trying to troubleshoot it since then, but I'm at a dead end.

Any help would be much appreciated. I've been using P2 for about 2 years now and this is the first time I've ever had an issue. Makes me a bit nervous.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael:

Sad to say that I had a 16GB go through the same thing this Summer. No warning, no hiccups, no sputters, just went bad. I sent to Panasonic in NJ and they replaced it. I would think Panasonic will replace it, don't think that the P2 cards are very repairable?

Let us know how it turns out for you.

Dan

sorry to hear about the trouble. I guess one positive thing is you had problems before you shot as opposed to getting it back after a "successful" shoot and THEN not having it work.

That's what happened to me. The card held an entire day of b-roll shooting around Glen Cove, NY. Luckily none of it was interviews, just b-roll so I drove out there the next day and re-shot it. Panasonic service told me that they could send the card to Osaka to attempt data recovery but it could take months.

I say you donate the card to DINO and let him take it apart for the education!

i mean our education :)

Thanks for the input guys. I'll see what Panasonic has to say tomorrow when I call about the ticket I opened yesterday. I'm hoping there won't be any issues with getting it replaced. I mean really, the 32 Gig cards have only been out less than a year anyway.

Fortunately, I discovered this problem when I was doing a time-lapse for my own personal project. So there was no client involvement and I didn't have to explain myself to anyone. But, I'm about to head to Tanzania for a documentary. I was planning on buying a 170 and 6 32 Gig cards for the project. Now I'm thinking I might be better off staying with the 16 Gig cards for safety sake.

I'll keep you posted on how Panasonic handles this.

Thanks,

Michael

Thanks Michael.

Good luck and keep us in the loop your project and this issue. I would be stunned and amazed of Panasonic didn't replace it. My 16GB was out of warranty and they replaced it so I am sure that you are Gold.

Dang, six 32s, that is some major scratch.

Dan

Yes, 6 32's is a lot of cash. Fortunately, there's a budget in place to cover it and it's not coming out of my pocket directly. I'm thankful for that...

A colleague of mine who I rent cameras from is experiencing some issues with two of 8 GB cards that he just traveled back from Europe with. He's not sure how they got zapped but he can't seem to read the data correctly from them.

If the card is being recognized but clips are having troubles I would try the "Repair Clip" feature in the camera first. If that isn't available, we would need to know a bit more about the problem to get them back up and running.
