Background of my shot is "breathing?"

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=142742

This pulsating periodic artifact seems to be similar to the post above. It was suggested that it is an mpeg thing related to gop compression.
michellefinch, what compression do you use?

I looked at the clip and I think the effect is different. In that link the pixels are shifting around in a different way than my problem... that problem definitely looks like a compression or encoding issue.

My problem- the "breathing background"- can't be because of compression, because it happens in the Final Cut monitor before even compressing it or creating a file or DVD from the footage.

We capture all of our footage from a deck into FCP with all of the standard settings.

Could it be a capturing issue or a setting? I haven't checked the original tape in a larger monitor yet to rule out a camera problem. But I did rule out the "steady shot" setting theory- I never have that setting on when on a tripod (or handheld, for that matter).

This is just to follow up on the "breathing problem" in manual mode. I have done what Saturin suggested; which is turning of OIS when using a tripod and so far the "breathing" or focusing problem hasn't re-occurred. I will do some more test since the breathing problem, for me atleast, would happen at intervals.

Michelle, how did it work out for you?

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me because I never have the "steady shot" option on. :)
I just checked my camera settings to be sure (since I haven't changed them since that last interview) and the OIS is off.

I never use that function and never see the little hand symbol in my viewfinders, so the older footage I have with this problem probably isn't because of OIS either...

I'm 99% sure it is not a compression problem because, like you mentioned, I get the "breathing" when I play back straight from the DVX.

I took the DVX to Panasonic and the only thing the tech told me was to not use Auto focus. Which I don't anymore, but I still get the "breathing" issue.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Could it have anything to do with that effect that is caused by certain colors/patterns? i forgot what that effect is called, but there is a term for it. If anyone saw the last pres debate, John McCain was wearing a tie that had that effect, it was driving me nuts, very distracting! Like black and white dots?

I'm not sure if patterns or colors are the cause of it because if I point the camera at a plain white wall I still get the same breathing problem. Although the breathing/strobing effect is more intense when there is complex patterns or colors in the scene.

michellefinch someone suggested shooting in Squeeze Mode (16x9). Give it a try, I'll do some test also, and let me know if that works for you.

I'm running out of ideas on how to solve this issue, if anyone else has a cure for this problem please let me know.

Unfortunately, its not the OIS. I have turned it off when ever the camera is on a tripod and I still get the breathing problem.

This could be a very serious issue.

There could be a very real possibility that you dvx is experimenting with either very good or very bad acid. You are going to have to have a long talk with your camera and find out which. If it turns out to be the bad acid lecture your camera about purchasing inferior product, however, if it should turn out to quality stuff, reprimand your dvx for not sharing.

But seriously,
There is a possibility that the OIS is malfunctioning slightly. Have you noticed any deterioration in stabilization when it is switched on?

LOL.

The OIS seems to be working okay. When its on, it does a decent job of stabilizing the footage.

My guess would be steady shot is on while on a tripod. I've seen "wavy" video on other cameras, including the Canon SD and HD cameras.

I hope you can figure out what's going on, because I've never seen it on the DVX100a before, nor the b.

had a look

had a look

quite interesting, there is a dangling piece of string that ondulates right and left, the whole background shifts focus it definately looks like cheap acid:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

but all joking aside, this is a serious problem IMO. I will do some tests myself. Is this DVX only? DVXa or what ?

Hey Jambredz,

Sorry for the late reply. I have a temporary fix, which is; I turn off OIS and always shoot in Squeeze mode.

So far it has worked. But if I ever shot in Normal or Letterbox, and with or with out OIS on, then I get the breathing problem.

So again, if anyone is having the same problem, just shoot in squeeze mode and have OIS off.

It almost looks like the camera is trying to focus on anything past the window, creating a flicker in & out. However I hope it's not the OIS, because I just shot a interview/party and this would really be alot of work to roto out. We'll see

To be completely honest, aside from the string moving in the window, I don't detect any unusual movement in the clip.

I do know that the camera will sometimes try to focus on many things at once, but this would make the main subject go in and out as well. Hmmmmm.

just got my dvx brand new (just as in yesterday)and i also have this prob...i'm seeing it in autofocus. when i put it on manual focus it seems to stop. its very stechy tests though as i just got it...so i'll test some more and see. Oh and its not all the time by any means so far. i just noticed it and started observing...as i say will do some testing.

ran some test...and it happens when in auto focus mode telephoto lens for me. trembling like crazy.when i switch to manual focus it stops. i;m shooting in squeeze also (handheld). didnt try it on the others yet. OIS on of off...doesnt matter. and no it wasn;t trembling cuz of my hand..the actual cup was "shivering". sucks cuz this is a new cam...i plan to use mostly manual anyway but it still sucks. more testing 2morrow. tired
