So this is funny..

I'm preparing to put together some indoor test footage with the HMC150 and Letus Ultimate and I realize I can't find my SD card. I'm looking everywhere, in my bag, camera, gear....

Then I start to remember...

Shoot! I left it in my pants pocket but I threw my clothes in the washing machine. The SD card had gone through two complete washing cycles!!

I thought for sure it would be dead. The inside felt soaked.

I dried it out for four hours and just thought what the heck it looks dry enough.

Stuck it in my SD Card Reader and Presto my footage was still there!

Morale of the story these SD cards are so small when you are done put it in a safe secure place that is not your pants or shirt pocket.

But if you do, you may still have your footy and you may live to tell another day.

I guess this would be a plus for the HMC150 over HDV, I don't think a tape would survive a washing machine. :)

Oh, here's a link for those who would like this robust card:

Yeah, I think there might be a few dropped frames if an HDV tape went through the washer and dryer

Too funny

Just think of how easy it would be to lose one of these cards - say you're working on a pier and you accidentally drop a card and it slips through the timber cracks and straight in to the water - right now that's the only thing I uber paranoid about because at least twice a month we do wedding shoots on the piers at Sydney Harbour and if you loose a memory card through there you aren't getting it back ;)

Maybe we'll have to attach something large to the cards to stop them from disappearing into cracks and crevices.

I did some major testing with my Sandisk & Transcend cards this week and I gotta say those Sandisk Ultra cards perform like class 6, whereas the Transcend ones are cheap & slow to write & format to slightly less than their specified capacity - you get what you pay for.

Same could be said for a miniDV/HDV tape. Honestly? I would load a 16gb or 32gb card into the camera before I got to the pier and just leave it there until after I left. If 90/180mintues isn't enough... man, I pity you for having to shoot that much non-ceremony/reception footage

You guys are too funny!!

I was lucky though. Because the SD Card could have still been in my pants pocket when it was thrown in the dryer and for sure it would have been toast!

I'm not going to do that test. :)

But overall pretty impressed with the ADATA Class 6 16G SDHC. Seems fairly fast to transfer footage to the computer. For $42 that's not bad.

Plus, if it gets dirty it can handle a good wash. :) (sorry couldn't resist.)

Can anybody post results of what would happen to transcend sdhc cards if put in to a waching machine. I hope to compare the results to the ADATA cards.
Should I start a new thread ?

I think that the results of such a test would be a wash...

In Australia where we have a large multi-cultural population it's not uncommon to shoot weddings (Muslim & Buddhist) where the couples are officially married days before the actuall wedding day, which means spending around 5 hours doing non-ceremony/reception shooting in parks, beaches, piers etc... I think anyone who's shot weddings for any length of time will tell you that in theory you can plan as much as you like but in real life tape/card usage sometimes falls by the wayside :)

All joking aside, everything has limits of too hot, too cold, too ...

However, I'll bet that an SDHC Card can be pushed to greater limits than an HDV Tape.

Not to mention that you have the ability to fit more footage in one load.

*sigh* that was a reach I know :(

The thing is that if the card is powered up water shouldn't damage it. The problem is when electricity travels inside the card, that's when the short circuit happens and everything goes off.

(but this is just me guessing)

If we use Gain detergent, will it will add more noise?

Awesome thread, now who's going to be the first to try their camera?!?
...Actually, that might actually be a really cool shot in a waterproof housing.

120V, 220V, or 240V and water is a bad thing. However, at low voltages, like 5V or lower, the current is limited. To be honest I've never tried to run a 5V digital circuit under water, but I don't think it would hurt things very much.

Water is bad for electrical, because it's never 100% pure and salts and minerals in the water will cause corrosion in the copper traces and connections.

I tried to measure the resistance of tap water and found that 1 cm of probes inserted about 1 cm apart reads about 80,000 ohms. I could not get an exact reading, because the number on the meter was all over the from 60,000 to 100,000 ohms.

5 volts / 80,000 ohms = 0.0000625 Amps = 62.5uA (micro amps)

I assume that if I had gotten the probes 1 mm apart, rather than 1 cm (10mm) apart, the resistance would have been 1/10 of what I saw. Even if the distance apart was 0.1 mm, the current would have been only 6.25 mA (0.00625 A); not very much.

I wish I had more time to play with this, but I have a class that I need to get ready for tomorrow....
