FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

Ok well I second Colors request....can you please spell it out for us.

I had the PHU-60K "media needs to be restored" tonight.
I was filiming at 1080P at a concert.
Very interested in your tests indicating the reason for that error occurring.
Are you saying the HD is a piece of junk in it's present form?? Will Sony fix it like you have said do you think?
Of course they won't as this would open the floodgates and they would never sell any SxS cards
You should sing this from the hilltops.....give Julie Andrews a copy.....Cards are holding the Camera back.

On another website this Sony guy posted this.

"Media needs to be restored" messages occur when the EX camera detects that the SxS card or HDD being inserted has foreign files or folders in the TAKR or CLPR subfolders. This can happen innocently enough; for example, by using Apple Finder to browse the contents of the card or HDD. Finder will create and write an index file of what is inside the folders. Every time a card or HDD is inserted, the camera checks the file/folder structure integrity. If the camera sees foreign files or folders, it issues the "media needs to be restored" message and verifies the card's file/folder integrity but does not erase the hidden files. In addition, if you change (rename) the SxS or HDD volume, the "media needs to be restored" message will occur (only once). In this case the camera will alter the metatdata to match the Volume name.

Just to clear up what stuff I am using, it is a Kensington Reader with the Sandisk Extreme III 16GB SDHC card with a serial # on the back
also a no go with a Transcend 8GB class C card
EX3 camera
Just a dumb question here but do the cards need to be pre-formatted outside the EX3 before use with the EX3. That is formatted on a computer platform and then reformatted inside the EX3. The cards I am trying to use have never been formatted. Does not seem likely but who knows

I'd love to be able to publically distribute the 1.11 update however I am too concerned about the possibility Sony would come down on me hard for this. Its not like Sony wouldn't be aware of everything that is going on but we can't know what their train of thought about all of this is. Your best bet is to provide an email contact and request that someone emails it too you. The zip file is about 6.8MB though. I know it is out there on the eMule network as well as on mininova.

I hope Sony realise that this is not about sticking it too them, it is about the money in our pockets. SxS is dam fast and dam expensive and from Sony there is no other option. The HDD is awkward, expensive and from accounts unreliable. What other option do we have? I am sure those with deep pockets can buy genuine SxS, but for the rest of us, well, here we are...
If we had a version of SxS which provided close to the value and performance of KxS, KxS would be dead over night.

No in theory, and probably best to only format them in the camera.

If you can write to the cards on a PC , then as long as they are formatted FAT32 they shouldn't be a problem. I am not sure if varying the sector size will cause problems though.

So far 3hats, you are the only person who has had a problem with getting KxS recognised on a EX1 1.11 or EX3. Hopefully it is only a faulty K module. At least however we still see a complete yes or no to working, at least your module didn't fail during production which is very important.
 
I don't get it. Called Sony, and they would do the upgrade for $100. I probably would spend that much, but then the logistics - pack the camera, send it to them, wait for who knows how long - which is what I don't like.

So I was hoping I would just do the upgrade by myself. After all, every hardware / software I've known have free (firmware / security) updates. So, why is Sony charging $100 in the 1st place?

This is the problem, people are saying their Transcend card do or don't work but Transcend have a range of SD and SDHC cards. I assume it is the one above as their web site says the 150x only goes to 8GB but who knows how often they update their site...

Have you tried your card in the K reader?

Funnily enough I was actually thinking about pictures of fake vs genuine Compact Flash cards and not SD cards!

remember it was a Sony site that first offered the download public. Yes, they eventually removed it. But, how can this be wrong to actaully use what they offered.

Also, if you look hard enough, I believe someone still has the 1.1 link to download on this forum.
 
I am not a pro but thanks to the people that figure thing out on the K&S combination. Here is my report on that combination using the EX3, it works great, no problem, I shoot at 1080p 30fps I got both items at Amazon.com, on the EX3, the door does close with that combination, I guess Sony found out about the EX1 not closing, so they made it longer for the EX3 improvement. Thanks Sony (helping us without knowing it)
 
I found the firmware upgrade files. Followed the instructions to install 1.10; went through everything successfully except that my current firmware remains 1.05 (the original one). The instructions say it may take 10 minutes, I am done in about 2 minutes (I get the message installation successful). Tried twice, but it still shows 1.05.

Am I missing something here? Am afraid to go to 1.11 before I can verify that 1.10 is installed. Did anyone have the same experience?

Tried one more time, no error message, but no upgrades either.
 
Again. this is Normal.


I heard about the 1.10 not showing before I did mine.
Once it shows "Installed Successful" and the animated gears STOP turning,
1.10 is installed.

When you have completed 1.10, do not worry it does not show 1.10, just move onto 1.11 firmware upgrade.
You will see 1.11 when it's finished.

Eureka! Thanks. How stupid of me (or Sony). You are installing 1.10, it is successful, but shows 1.05. Why? Who writes these programs? Anyway, now I feel like I belong to the elite class of users. KxS card and . . . the misery is over.
