FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

It doesn't worry me so much if people want to mess around testing other adaptors as the Kensington one can be difficult to source in many parts of the world. I even heard rumours that this is a discontinued card (due to its problems with Macs and sleep) and if this is true it could mean dwindeling supplies sooner rather than later (lets hope not).

Frankly speaking, I won't justify anymore research on the readers / SDHC cards as the marginal returns are negligible (a few dollars, at the most). But, it is because of the tinkerers like them that we have a good solution today. Why do we think there isn't a better solution out there?

At the same time, I personally am happy (assuming my tomorrow's UPS delivery proves its worth) with what we have found so far, and am not planning to get involved in any further discoveries.

Ai agree....look the Sxs 32gig is in and around 1,000.
The lads have found a system that works for around 1/10 of the price......go with it.

Is this the best value for the Sandisk Ultra II 32gig currently?

What is the best price anyone has seen for the genuine Sandisk Ultra II 16gig card??

Silly question but have to ask anyhow.....Kensingtons & Sandisk Ultra IIs bought in the Us work in Europe right?

lol, it won't make a difference if you have the right parts. I have Kensingtons from the US with Ultra IIs from Australia in an Aussie camera with a firmware from a Sony Korea web site, all works a treat

PS: Guys, I can understand you lack of interest in further investigations, all I am interested in is if others who do try stuff tell us the results, and if any actual manufacturer wants to try to meet all our needs I'd love to have a chat :) Who'd complain if Kensington decided to start making this current adaptor with a fully flush card...

Amazon is about $148 on the 32gb SanDisk. I've had one on order for a month and they are quoting delivery Nov 12-Dec 1.

I agree about research with different combinations. Right now, Kensington works. Transcend 8 gb works. SanDisk Ultra II and Extreme III work. I'll just leave it at that.

Unfortunately Carl there are other reports of IxT not working reliably. The problem being encountered is that of the combo not being recognised when inserted on a fairly regular basis. On that basis I personally can't recommend it.

Also, the results with Transcend cards has been somewhat vaired. Like yourself, some swear buy them, but others have not had such luck, which leaves us, once again having to 'recommend' only the products which to date, have not failed at all (excluding out of the box faulty products), and thats KxS.

Howdy...

For those of us who weren't able to snag the firmware for the brief time it was on the website, can anyone suggest where I might find a copy (tried googling...D'oh!)

K&S Rocks, why play with the loosers. Playing with new combination is a good thing, it help find new combinations that works. If Kensington goes off the Market, becourse of the Mac thing, we are in trouble and Sony will win in the long run. As of now, anyway.

Got my KxS set, tried it, and it worked. Didn't do any thorough investigation as others have already done it. Now I have 60 + 30 + 30 = 120 minutes of 1080P recording time! How cool can that be? The sony cards were free, the 16 gig KxS cost me $105. Given that my EX1 was $10,000+ cheaper than Panasonic HPX500 (my original shopping list), I guess I lucked out big time. The coolest thing is, I can spend another $60 and get another 60 minutes! From Frys. From Best Buy. Probably, Walmart too.

Another huge plus - I can pull the SDHC card out and download straight into my laptop or the Mac via the USB reader that came with the card. No need to connect a USB cable to the fragile camera port.

After 10 months of pre-production work, this Saturday is when I start the shoot. Perfect timing!

If you're concerned, buy four or more Kensingtons now.

But even if they were discontinued, I'm sure over the next six months another expresscard adaptor will come about and work in the EX.

Thanks to Steve and Guy for their awesome work and testing! I had thought that the EX1 was way beyond our price range (for our next HD cam, currently shooting with an XL2), including the SxS cards, etc. But with these findings I can save a bit more, and the dream might actually happen! (Still considering the HMC150, but will have to decide between the two if/when I actually get my hands on both.)

Additional thank you to Guy for posting up that KxS info site!

Hopefully, (like other posters have worried about) Sony doesn't release a firmware to disable the SD card-mojo-flow :)

Best,

 I Got ya, GuyB: on the IxT combo, maybe the question on varience is the 8Gig cards vs the 16Gig. cards. I have had no problem with the New 16Gig. cards. P.S. has anyone tried the Kingsington adaptor with the Transcend 16Gig. card yet? -- Carl

I am not a pro, but I do have 2 Kensingtons adpators, it seems that what works with the Mac does not really work with the Sony EX video cameras. I really don't think there will be another expresscard that will be like the Kensington. Becourse the way it is built, it cost 3 times more then the others. and what is important, it does not works with the Mac and there are many more Macs then Sony EX. It just my 2 cents worth.

Yes some have, and its a similar storey, some swear 100% by it while others report odd problems here and there. I think part of it is the fact no one actually details which Transcend card they are using and perhaps there are other differences in batch's we don't know of etc

I'm just testing some Transcend 16gb cards class 6 which so far are happy in the Kensingtons, I have 2 KxT running at S&Q 40 - after a day or two I'll try a higher rate to push them a bit.

Interestingly at the same settings, my Transcend 8gb class 6 cards fail after 5 seconds. I don't think they are fakes, as they are from the same dealer, bit strange. So now I have 4x 16gb Ultra II's and 3x 16gb Transcends, I guess this is enough for now as they are sure fine at normal crank HQ.

Paul, run the Crystal Dick Mark utility to determine the data rate difference between your Transcend 8GB and 16GB cards.
You can download it for free on the net.

I have it, I'll run a test later today.

So this is it:

Transcend 16gb class 6
19.25 14.52
19.04 2.47
4.65 0.022

Transcend 8 gb class 6
19.37 9.32
19.25 2.28
4.84 0.024

so it's all in the sequential write.
These results for the 8gb are almost identical to the ones I got a week or two ago, before I recieved my 16gb versions which work fine to 40fps overcrank.
