some P2 clips play on camera but won't import...

Can't find thread on this...

I've got some clips on 2 P2 cards that play fine on camera an won't import. I'm using FCP 5. Some of the clips of each card will import, some won't.

Using File>Import>Panasonic P2

Error message is "One or more P2 clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupt clips".

I've had this with Firestore before, never with any P2 card. Tried repairing clip in menu, didn't do anything, don't really know what i'm doing here. Also what does the "!" mean on the camera display thumbnail of a clip? Is that just reminding me I have a continuous clip?

Help!

The last version of FCP was 5.0.4. Then it moved to 5.1.x and now FCP 6.0.x.

Which do you have, and what machine is it installed on? PPC or intel Mac?

Sorry, yes, 5.0.4 it was a typo. Computer is a PowerPC. Have tried multiple times to import those clips - nothing. I need to get them of those cards!

The issue with the following answer is that 5.0.4 doesn't have a PREFERENCES pane I don't think. That was the first version to support HD P2. But see...I'm not sure.

I'd upgrade if I were you. There have been MANY improvements to the P2 workflow in FCP 6.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.

Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."

Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.

What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.

ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.

So why have I been importing 720 24pn P2 for the last 2 years without ever having to uncheck "remove pulldown" before?. I realize I need a FCP upgrade. Realistically I can't go out and buy the FCP 6 this afternoon. I need to get these clips off the cards - are there any shortcuts/alternate routes in FCP 5.0.4 to get P2 clips off the cards besides using File>Import>Panasonic P2 on my existing setup of HVX>firewire>mac?

P2 Log will convert the files to Quicktime files. There is also MXF4QT that will allow FCP to read the native MXF files. As well as Calibrated Softwares MXFImport (http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/MXFImportQ_OSX.html). P2CMS installs a component that allows you to open the files in QT...I think FCP will import them then...although audio and video won't be tied as one clip. All but P2CMS cost money.

Logging and capturing P2 "old school" and Quicktime plug-in for P2CMS...

Logging and capturing P2 "old school" and Quicktime plug-in for P2CMS...

Thanks for the link, I've seen this program discussed here but never used it. I'm feeling much better that I got the content copied onto a drive from the cards, but can't figure out how to get this stuff into FCP5. I realize I am missing a lot of upgrades, so starting there.

I did figure out a way to get the 72024pn footage off the the cards and start cutting in FCP, however...playing the clips from the camera as if it were tape and good ol "log and capture". I have never seen this pointed out as an emergency transfer method for P2 clips that are corrupt before. Am I missing something here? I did a test and the clips is fine, plays back in 720 23.98 timeline, and clip info says that's what it is. Yeah, it's real-time so it sucks, still less time than the hours I've spent all morning and last night trying to retrieve a corrupt P2 clip that plays back fine in the camera...

Thanks, Shane.
