Schoeps CMC-6U + MK41 extraordinary Mic distance ?

The Tapeless One
I have always followed the "As close as possible to the sound source" booming technique, however on this last job, we were on Schoeps CMC-6U + MK41 setup, and was requested to "give the mic some air to breathe" & "I love to have some ambient room sound to the dialog". I did as was requested by the old veteren mixer, and the sound turned out good.

Is it just that the Schoeps CMC-6U + MK41 are so excellent that it defies the general "get as close as possible to the sound source" rule ?? or these guys are extremely old school ??

I also go by my own rule of "giving it some air" microphone placement techniques. Even at 8 feet or 10 feet for a WIDE shot still comes out good. I say go by the camera's perspective (audience's perspective) and your audio to visual will be more natural and realistic than the "close as possible" technique.

These veteran mixers are used to their own habits. They've done it 1000x, know how to approach and will get great results.

absolutely agree. i never freak out about that situation, and will only ever use personals on a wide shot if there isn't going to be any other coverage, but i will still prefer the results i get with the boom

Now here is some irony. I would agree with always go with the boom in post. However on a recent project I'm 99% lav. The boom ops were students and I don't think they got close enough, there was a LOT of room on the tracks (boom tracks). Everything was well covered with lavs on every body and sometimes two booms, lots of tracks. But after going through it all I'm almost never using the boom other than as an instant reverb. Ya just never know.

That was an artistic choice in a specific situation, but 99.376% of the time you want it as close as you can get it to reduce room ring if you're inside. Outside, provided the ambient noise isn't too great, you can also pull back. I went for a shoot on Capitol Hill. We were supposed to be inside. I didn't bring a shotgun that day. Next thing I know were were outside...in some wind. I stood blocking the wind with my body and aimed the Schoeps at the congressperson. The cmc641 reached very nicely. What a nice surprise!

you dont get the mic to close not to get proximity effect ( exception to sanken sc3 which doesn't have one), other wise you keep the distance as close as possible to eliminate the room . sometimes mixers don't like drastically change when you go from wide shot to tight as the change in distance making sound jump , so you go to have more room tone blended inside .
