Premiere Pro CS4 New Features - Info Request

Hey, all --

I'm preparing a DVXuser article on the new features in CS4, concentrating mostly on Premiere Pro, but getting into improvements for the whole suite, too.

I'd like to know if you have any specific questions. I know what's important to me, but I'm not you, and it may not occur to me to mention something if you don't ask. :) So let me know!

I can't answer anything here; the article will be available in the Articles section after the Adobe announcement event on 9/23.

I just want to know what you . . . want to know. I'll incorporate it if I can, if I haven't already.

Thanks.

Will PPro CS4 allow pulldown removal for HV20 footage?

I saw something on the Adobe.com forum that suggested that in CS4 users will be able to mix and match different media types (e.g., P2 and HDV) on the same timeline.

That got me hoping that they've incorporated an After-Effects style "Interpret Footage" cammand that allows us to easily configure pulldown removal for a variety of cadences, or even "guess pulldown."

The HV20 is a fun little camera but right now there's not easy way to use it in Premiere except to remove the pulldown in another program, transcode, and import those files into Premiere.

64bit support? I know lightroom can rock 64bit, I think photoshop can as well. So premiere...?

Long shot but...Linux support? hahahaha I shouldn't have even asked.

Cool, thanks for the link Daygola. Sounds like the 64 bit support is good enough for my purposes.\
eta - nice to see the OMF export improved as well.

I'm wondering though... OMF export "improved?" Am I completely missing something cuz CS3 doesn't seem to have OMF support at all. Only AAF.

Anyways, if that means they're ADDING OMF support as a new feature, this is amazing... Even though Protools now supports AAF, OMF is still awesome to have. Plus the fact that Soundbooth is now multitrack and you can send your Premiere AND After Effects timeline to it... THAT'S what I've been waiting for!

Too bad when you drag clips around in the timeline, you cant actually SEE the clips as you move them... It's a small thing but it makes lining up waveforms, etc so much easier. VEGAS and other audio programs (AUDITION, SOUNDTRACK PRO, PROTOOLS) are the only programs that have this feature but I think that even though it seems to be an "audio app feature," it would still be an awesome little plus to have in an editing app.

Going from Vegas back to Premiere, it's definitely one of those things that I miss and although it's a small thing, it would make things a little more convenient.

But yeah, if this stuff is true, this version of Premiere (and Production Studio Premium) seems to be ready to kick some major ass! Did I mention that you can type a phrase into Premiere and it will find it in your dialogue? Yep, almost like Avid's script sync, but not as cool... but DEFINITELY an awesome feature. There are going to be some huge improvements in metadata. Can't wait to see it!

Oh yeah I was totally thinking of the AAF export. OMF export would be nice but the ultimate would be soundbooth doing multitrack and direct exporting to it. Thats got me excited. More or improved metadata would be a great benefit as well. And finding a phrase in my dialogue??? Sounds like voodoo magic to me. I can think of many times I couldve used that though. I'm really starting to dig all of these cs4 features. Looks like I'll be making the upgrade when it comes around.

I wonder what CS4 will cost as an upgrade from CS3, which I just bought in June :( Grrr, haha. I hope it's not too much.

Will they fix all of the buggy outstanding issues with Adobe Encore CS3? I'm talking about the ones where the if the program uses over 1,400mb of RAM the whole thing stops working, currupts project files, and generally wont create masters.

Will they add more support for different DLT drives in Encore CS4? Will There be a way to burn DDP images to DVD-5s so you don't even have to bother with the tape drive?

Will Premiere Pro allow you to adjust RED meta data on the fly? When you're working with R3D footage, will the auto preview size help with performance on slower Machines? (i.e. 25% viewport, only renders 1/4 of the pixels)

Does the jump to 64 bit alleviate all of the ram constricted issues that I run into when dealing with HD projects?

What applications are 64bit native? Which ones arent?

Will I need 64-bit video directshow plugins for the 64bit native applications to view forign video files? How will 64-bit Premiere Pro handle Quicktime files, since there is no 64-bit version of QT yet?

Will AVC-INTRA be included in the "new supported tapless formats" ?

Are most of the issues fixed with Project manager handling files over 4GB, or mixed media in a single timeline?

Flip footage checkbox for films recorded with a flipped 35mm adaptor?

Describe to me the new benefits of the External Adobe Media encoder. Can you encode a project file without it being open, or creating an intermediate? Will there be "reference files" that you can create, much like you can do with FCP for external applications?

Hey,

I was hoping that Apple Color would have made Adobe bring in a dedicated color correction application. Is there any chance that Adobe is going to supprise us and offer an application similar to Apple Color?

Thanks

Not when you can do everything color can do and a whole lot more in AE.

Did anyone have issues with performance and stability of Premiere CS3 on MAC? And just the performance of CS3 in general?

I am wondering how Premiere Pro CS4 performs on Leopard, how stable it is, etc. If it is fast and stable... this looks like a pretty killer suite.

I am also wondering, it says support for 4k workflows - will this work with footage from the RED cams?

It says background rendering - does this mean the new media encoder (basically Apple Compressor, Adobe style), or does it refer to the ability to render sequences out of Premiere Pro or create render files in the background while editing continues?

Also, in FCP, when capturing HDV footage you can capture and transcode direct to ProRes, so that you are working with an intermediate codec and don't have to edit HDV footage. Can you do something similiar in Premiere? Or do you need a 3rd party tool?

I'm assuming the 4K workflow supports RED as they support native R3D editing. Also, Media Encoder renders in the background so you can keep working in Premiere while it's rendering. Media Encoder is now a separate application.

I dont know why they couldnt implement batch rendering in cs3, so is it like after effects with grid iron nucleo pro, where I can set up 10 projects for render, go to sleep and everything be done?
