how do I get raw p2 data into fcp6?

I am having the hardest time trying to figure this out!!

Can someone list step by step how you would get raw p2 footage via firewire into final cut pro? I cant figure it out or find a thread on it for the life of me!

Thanks so much!
Andrew

duh - 6.

but there is more to it. "via firewire" can mean a lot of things. do you mean from a firewire drive or from the camera connected via firewire?

when you use log and transfer, fcp actually makes a quicktime copy of your p2 content and places it into the capture scratch folder. so if you work like i do and copy all your P2 content from the cards and onto your work drive you will have the original footage AND the converted quictime file.

the camera connected via firewire, im aware of the log and transfer method and that has worked fine, but I'm talking about the actual raw footage, like if I were to try and double click on the drive thats on the desktop when the drive is mounted. how do you copy those files and then get those into fcp? BTW im using FCP 6

If you mean you want to use the actual MXF files on the FCP timeline, you can't do it -- at least not effectively. With P2CMS installed, you can put the video files on the timeline, but there will be no audio brought in with it.

That might be OK if you recorded the audio separately anyway.

Or, you can use Raylight to create proxy QuickTime files which link to the original MXF files without the need to transcode. It's not actual timeline support of the MXF files, but it's functionally 99% the same, and it gives you nice tools for using the metadata.

Andrew:

It would be appreciated if you would answer a few of the questions from the responders.

In other words, are you trying to mount the p2 card, import p2 mxf data directly, have you write protected the card, are you using a Firewire connect mode transfer, etc?

thanks

David,

Yes I am trying to mount the p2 card, then copy the MXF data onto an external drive then log into FCP (in which now I figured out thanks to the video link above), and yes I'm using a firewire directly from the camera. but my additional question is.... If footage is SPANNED how do I get that into FCP? it looks as though it loads by giving me the progress bar, but when its done the clip does not go to the que? In other words is there a technique to log spanned clips?

I hope this makes more sense..

Thanks
Andrew

Andrew,
Here's the workflow I use:
Create a folder to copy each P2 card to. (My folder naming scheme is 0919A01..0919B01...0919A02...0919B02 Etc.). Pick a scheme that works best for you.
Copy each p2 card into the corresponding folder (both "LASTCLIP.txt file and the CONTENTS folder).
Backup those folders as they are now your raw footage source.
Go to "Log and Transfer" in FCP.
Navigate to those folders.
If a file spans two folders, make sure both are open in the "Log and Transfer" window.
Set in and out points if necessary in the viewer and add them to the que.
FCP will join the spanned files when in imports them into your project.
You will find the captured files in your FCP Capture Scratch folder.

Hope this helps.

JB, thanks that makes sense, the only thing I didnt quite get is what do you mean by if the clip spanned, to make sure they are open in the log and tranfer window? how do you open them?

Thanks
A.

I watched that tutorial which helped tremendously, but It still didn't cover how to log spanned footage, I now know how to get footage in, but not spanned footage?

Thanks
A

Mount all the card dumps in the L&T window. If footage is spanned between them, it will stitch them together. If you have the LASTCLIP.txt file.
