Canon XH-A2/XH-G2

Thanks Robert. I was starting to wonder if I was getting a bit carried away.

As you said, Canon just needs the will to do it. 2k and 4k would be great, but at this point I'd be extremely happy with an affordable 1080p AVC-HD model with inter-changeable lens mount and super low light capabilities. For now I think the important thing is to get past the whole industry stigma of having to have fixed lenses, or even in the case of the XL line having no better DOF or larger sensors even with expensive lenses. Would I take a 2k or 4k camera at a reasonable price, absolutely.

Of course Scarlet will still have the extreme slo-mo abilities to their advantage for some time I think.

RED will dominate slo-mo simply because they decided to do so. Canon could make the same decision. Those crazy kooks in Irvine don't have anything in their skunkworks that Canon doesn't already have or couldn't easily acquire. The difference is that Team RED is thinking differently.

In the end, I suspect Canon will make a decently measured attempt at competing with the EX3 and the EX1 and not make a RED challenger. Most likely it will be 1/2" chips that will render all our lenses useless and require us all to use the stock lens that comes with it and wait 18 months for a new Wide Angle lens later (LOL).

And Canon should go after this semi-high-end market.

But, at the end of the day, I really think Canon should swing for the fences and produce a flagship camera that would drop jaws (even if it's a money loser - like Sony's done with the F23).

If they use a standard 1/2" lensmount, there wouldn´t be a need to wait for a wideangle.
For me, it´s a sure bet: they build a body with 1/2" chips and then bundle it with one of their 1/2" broadcast lenses, no need for proprietary XL lenses anymore...

Yeah, but their broadcast lenses run in the tens of thousands. They'd need to make some dramatic changes to the glass, the coatings, and the housing to get the cost down to what we XL users are accustomed .... $2-3K maximum. That's a big change from a lens that normally costs $20K.

However, you do make a good point that if Canon is smart and uses a universal mount and not a XL-centric mount, then we'd have the option to use higher-end, professional grade glass. I'm all about renting the best glass out there. I just want to make sure I can rent or buy 1/2" glass without needing some funky adapter.

Maybe an HD adaption of these standard lenses would come cheaper:):

Of course the new XL or whatever it will be called would go up in price, totalling between an EX3 on the low end and a 355 or HPX500 on the "high" end, but that´s exactly the market that needs some rivalery:beer:
The new A1 can later take on the 170/EX1...
