The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

I can't be bothered reading all this, can someone sum up the previous 205 pages and 2000 posts in 8 easily understood words please.

Go get a D-90 and help us out then! :cheesy:

we are trying hard... well not me, but kholi, zak and drew are!

I'm sure some of you might already be aware of the PCLIX intervalometer:

https://www.pclix.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=1

With a control cable a pclix comes to just under $200.00. Still sucks that we all thought the D90 had one built in.

Too bad the auto Nikon lenses will only be useful for photography and not video. That sucks for me because I can't yet afford to go bonkers buying a ton of lenses if I pick up a D90. The question is do I get some manual ones for video, but then what about when I need a good VR zoom lens for photography? I have to admit that it takes the punch out of this thing if I can't effectively use all DX compatible Nikon lenses, not just manual ones. I though you could turn off the auto functions / VR on the newer zoom lenses. Correct me if I am mistaken.

I have to say though, even with the heavy compression a lot of the stuff I've seen so far looks really good in terms of actually looking like proper film. Some of the compression artifacts are not that bad overall. They kinda remind me of the noise on a DVX.

Hunter said something way back somewhere about the video looking better if is converted to 1080p then downconverted back to 720p. I was thinking, could you get away with using something like Red Giant's Instant HD for this? Also, doesn't Instant HD have some sort of anti aliasing or de-artifacting feature? I wonder if this could help with some of the disadvantages of M-JPEG.

Wait for the body only option, which should be coming in October. Get the 18-200 mm fx lense. It's an excellent lens (it's a pro lens so it's build with steel not plastic). That will cover pretty much all of your photo needs in one single pkg. Then if you want to use the D90 for video with manual iris lens, there are many great lenses that can be had on ebay for pretty cheap.

My thoughts on the D90 is that it's not meant to replace a HD video camera, but Nikon is probably testing the ground and is definitely opening a door that could really shake the video industry.

I take this as a crack at the DPReview folks? :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Of course I read the entire friggen thing before I signed up and made my first post...

It is DX not FX. While it has a decent build quality with some metal in its construction it is assuredly NOT a pro lens. I have one. But they hit the mark considering the inherent compromise in such an aggressive design.

Thanks for the lens suggestion SomewhereinLA. Yep, I was thinking of the 18-200mm and just getting the body plus either the 50mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.8, and then maybe a 24 or 28mm for wide shots. Maybe then a while later I would pick up either the Nikon 12-24 or Sigma 10-20 zoom if needed for still photography use. I suppose I'd also eventually need an 85mm or 100mm prime for cinema purposes. All that should cover me for both, I hope.

Hopefully there will eventually be a DSLR Cinema section added somewhere on this site and we can then organize the different topics like manual settings, lenses, etc. into different threads.

Kholi's video with less contrast

So much better! I need to figure out why this thing is adding so much contrast. I hav ea feeling I need to start tweaking the image a bit more with the Vivid and Natural, etc.

=( I couldn't get to the real tests today, the other one has been sick so no subject to light. And I'm not about to shoot anymore trees.

Hopefully tomorrow, peoples. Or later tonight since I do have my lights with me.

Genius !

What have these idiots being doing for over two hundred pages of posts !!

It often takes a maverick to come along and point out the obvious, well done ! I think it is safe to say we can now close the thread.

Oh boy.

Another query,

I read somewhere you can, in some Nikon software that is unknown to me, draw your own curves for the sensor and upload them to the camera via the same software.

Anyone with any knowledge of this, or has done this, ??

It would be interesting to really control the image at the sensor level as far as response curves.

Also, 'can' it Lee, I was just asking for the user manual, is all

Thanks again all for the tests,
was looking at pro-res conversions on my HDTV through HDMI from FCP, a lot of the stuff looked great. I find the jello-vision tough to watch up close, but as soon as you are on a couch watching on HDTV from a safe distance, it just looks like exotic operator shake.. not bad at all and nothing a 'layperson' could determine to be an image flaw...

That is vaguely familiar. I've heard something like that before. Don't know where and doubt it's d90 compatible. Very cool if it was though!

I think the stuff here looks very nice:

yes, indeed, very controlled shooting, hardly any movement. Puts another check on my 'buy' side of the page.
Maybe I will purchase, When the damn thing finally arrives in Canada which is neck-stabbing weeks after you all get a crack at it. Can't I just go into a coma and wake up with the third vers. of the d90 in my hands already??

usr manual>??

I don't see a user manual on the CD that comes with it. It's not auto-running, so I can't even install the software. There are no .exe's or setup files anywhere on the disk.

You should be able to dial in whatever you want with the picture controls, no?

I was trying to find a downloadable version of the manual but nothing. I have my hopes that tomorrow I will be able to get my camera. One BB had 3 cameras sold out but they told me that the other one close to me had three in stock. Have to get up early tomorrow and go to the bank.
