Promotional Banjo Video

This is a short video that I was asked to put together to promote a new product that the company I work for is launching. I was given the task on Thursday morning and they wanted it done by Friday afternoon. They handed me a miniDV tape with an hour of footage that someone else had shot and told me to "Do what I could" with it.

I grabbed my DVX and got a few additional shots, threw in some stills, and there you have it. It was definately a rush job, the banjo music and voiceover were recorded (by me) and edited into the video less than an hour before it went up on the web with the daily update. All in all, I think it came out fairly well as it serves its purpose without being distracting. Critiscisms are welcome!

PS: The content of the video is actually pretty interesting, these guys are making banjo parts and rims out of wood that really doesn't even exist anymore. Old growth rock maple does not grow anywhere in the world today and is technicaly extinct!

It was done very well. I only have two nits to pick- It seems as though the commentary and video were slightly out of sequence, in regards to the process of sawing the strips. And where is the 6 fingered banjo kid from Deliverence?

Interesting subject. The only thing that bugged me (not much though) is the pacing. Well made all in all. Good clear sound of the narrator. Nice footage. Maybe a 'little' bit more sound of the factory?

Man that's a cool and interesting doc. Ok I'm watching it again. It isn't the pacing. I think it's that it seems like you go back over the process several times. I guess you want to go more into detail.

Nah I dig it. Good stuff for sure.

Well, part of it was that the guy in charge of the project wanted me to mix up the steps involved and repeat and reorder certain things to make the process seem as impressive and complicated as possible.

I really had a lot of "It needs to be this way" breathing down my neck, so it got to a point in the editing where I'd say "Ok, this is wierd" but the guys in charge were going "Exactly! It's perfect!"...I'm sure some of you know how that goes!

I have a friend who moved to Georgia, to the same town that kid lived in. All grown up, and not all there, he worked in a hardware store sweeping up and whatnot.

I lived in Toccoa, GA for a while, in the next county south of Rabun County. I've been to the diner where he worked at the time, but I never saw him.

Honestly I found a few things that bugged me.
1.Really seemed to drag....a music bed would have added some extra ummph rto the entire piece. (banjo playing)
2.The VO was boring as all heck. Made a comment on "here's a showroom or something"
3.handheld shots I know weren't yours......but they weren't very good, they must of had too much coffee.

Other than that ...I can appreciate the difficulty of using someone elses footage and make it your own. kinda like putting a KIA engine in your vintage BOSS MUSTANG.

Agreed... another thing that really bothered me was the cross dissolve's. They almost made me sick. Many of those would look a lot better with just a straight cut.

Other than that, and in the time allowed, I'd say you definitely pulled if off.
