Why no love for Premiere in the job world?

It does not come with any decent color correction and is lacking in the export area.

Funny, I wonder why Adobe put a folder in the effects window called color correction .And they actually had the nerve to put 17 different tools in there. There's also a folder called Adjust, crazy people and what about the proc amp filter .Thats the last thing I would use.

Ooh my trusty campanion how there is no love for you.

So it looks like Premiere is the victim of it's past reputation...

It looks like I can't fight the current requirement for job market skills, so probably after I finish my latest gig in a month, I may invest in a mac and FCP after all..

Thanks everyone. :dankk2:

I've avoided FCP for years... I've had AfterEffects and FC Express... While some people have shown some pretty good stuff done in FCP, I was doing all manner of things with AfterEffects 5.5 on my PC laptop...

One of the things that sort of bothered me about FC was it's 'video' orientation... well of course... but for most of my media work, I do a lot of still image manipulations, and so I started with 'square pixel' stills, and wanted to create 'strange' screen dimensions, like 1024x600 or whatever... because I was predominantly making material for computer/web/internet display, the connect to 'video' and 'broadcast' were remote.

Hence my need was to only have essentially a fancy 'moviola' bed for splicing and dicing video. I'd then resize the clips in AE to whatever I wanted for my media output.

As it turns out, I just got a CS3 Production Pro bundle (mainly to update my AfterEffects and Photoshop, and a need to do DVD and now apparently Blu-Ray development), so now I have Premiere Pro, and I'll be seeing if it really is a integrated solution to my video and other media needs... I was poise to by the FCP bundle but then it occured to me that I also needed to update my Photoshop, so after the dust settled... CS3 was the choice...

I'll still use FC E + AE 7 on my iBook, because I definitely am not going to install the CS3 on that platform...

I have been reading that its difficult to get OMF files through post on Vegas. Does Premiere do any better with post audio? What limitations would Premiere have going to post?

Hey Barry,

I thought FCS 3 was supposed to have really solid p2 support for the new panny's. Did i hear wrong?

have you used adobe bridge? take the video into after effects and bam....all the color corretion you could ever need...and it updates automatically in premiere.

Update: Got my macbook about 2 weeks ago and adjusted to FCP within a week.

Ended up getting 3 calls from mandy/craigslist for FCP editing positions and chose one of them. I just started working on my client's FCP rig last wed.

I like FCP, although I still prefer Premiere since it was what I was technically raised on.

How big of an adjustment was there? I too was brought up on Premiere, and pretty disgruntled by the last few versions. I don't know if I'm disgruntled enough to go Mac though, that is a different hurdle all together.

If you've been using Premiere, then you can adjust to FCP in a few days or so.

However, there are alot of subtle changes you'll need to adjust to. Keyframing for opacity is now done with FCP's pen tool rather than clicking on the red line (premiere 6.5) or selecting the keyframe on the track (premiere pro). You also need to double click a clip in order to add any filters to it.

Probably my biggest gripe is FCP's "preciseness" when scrubbing through the timeline. If you set a marker and seek/scrub over it, your cursor will automatically go to the marker. It can get kind of annoying if you just want to seek/scrub through your timeline, but you'll come to a stop at every marker you make. I'm sure there's a way to turn it off, but I haven't fooled around with it alot yet.

Another gripe is how FCP needs to render footage before you can even view it in it's monitors. I imported a huffy encoded avi I did on my PC to FCP and it needed to render it before I could even see it. Now I encode my files into DV instead of huffy on the mac.

Once you get used to the nuisances, FCP isn't really too different than Premiere.

in fcp, use the 'n' key to toggle the snapping to cuts and markers on and off.

Premiere Pro was a ground-up rebuild which wasn't based on the old code -- what legacy bugs are you seeing? I'm not saying they aren't there; I'm just curious.

It's been some time since I've actually used Premiere, so I'm not even sure. However, while I was researching it, I came across the same exact bug all the way back. It is a failure to return frame or something along those lines. Just comes out of nowhere.

Yeah, there are a couple of little bugs in Premiere .. but it varies greatly on your hardware system.

Mostly the way Premiere handles system resources (memory, hard-drive access) have littl ebigs that can get you some times. .. and of course it's always a "hardware probelm".
Funny, Edius didn't have a problem with the hardware when I had to use the trial to cut a project.

Don't get me wrong, premiere is a very very caipable editing system that I too have grown up on, it does a lot of very good things and shouldn't be considered any different to FCP. But it does have it's quirks sometimes.

Oh, and the titler does have more bugs than you can shake a stick at.

I think premier pro needs to go 64 bit, as does everything windows. I also think that it needs to have some better color correction options within premier itself. I also think it would be nice to have a better title editor, maybe some more templates, some animated titles and overlays. Yes I understand that After effects can do all of these things, but I'm just saying what I would like to see in order to keep me on the adobe bandwagon.

I want to go mac, because lets face it, their operating system is a huge plus over windows. But once there I am not sure what I will do as far as editing software goes..Avid,Premier, or FCP. I am glad I found this thread however.

My small ranting

Hey guys, I'm a huge Premiere Pro 2.0 user and I love it! PC users have a very big advantage over Mac people. I use the Matrox RTX100 real-time editing system.
Does Mac have that? Hmmmm? You also get super-smooth slow-mo with it as well!
Long Live Premiere Pro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell.. I am still using PPro 1.5. And I know I don't know everything about it. But it beats the hell out of Windows Movie Maker.

When I was in the Army, Avid was king with the Public Affairs and Broadcast people. I don't think they got my point of view that Premiere and Avid are "final staging" products and usually cannot do things like After Effects and other such programs can do.

I completely redesigned the intro the the news show that we did in Kosovo - The Guardian Review - I also introduced them to the concept of nameplates on the bottom of the screen, and rolling credits at the end. And these guys were full time broadcast soldiers.... I was the G6 (Automation) geek that did this as a hobby and hoping to breakthrough into the full time side.

Now, I don't want people think that I am totally dissing on my fellow soldiers, since I did learn a lot from them about proper lighting and framing of shots and all that good stuff... it just amazed me that they never tried to do that. I also think that they just didn't have time to learn AE.

There have been 3 rotations since I left Kosovo, and none of them could touch what we did. Especially in the post production and overall graphics thanks to After Effects and other such products.

But still... for some reason, FCP and Avid are still considered.
