HMC150 questions answered...

It's september folks when will the hmc-150 come out , can' t wait !
Can anyone confirm if the european version will be switchable ?

I did a quick search of the net to verify the USA Ship date, it is given as Thursday, October 2, 2008.

That could change, but until I see any updates, it looks like it's about 1 month to go.....

I'm sure this has already been asked somewhere else in the 49 pages of this thread but does anyone know if the Letus35 Extreme (or Ultimate for that matter) HVX200 Optimization Package will work with the HMC150?

Barry, how similar is the position on the thread underneath in relation to the front of the lens compared to the dvx, i have a 35mm adaptor and some other bits that i made to fit the dvx, will current dvx mattebox/bars combos fit right onto the 150?

Thanks

Time code with HDMI capture?

Time code with HDMI capture?

I'm pretty sure that you don't get metadata and time code when capturing through the HDMI connection. Is there a way to capture with TC?

Anybody?

Don't know everything for sure, but I put the Ultimate on the HMC150 and it looked pretty darn good as is. My Ultimate has the HVX achromat. You can see some stills earlier in this thread (the shots of the prairie girls).

I didn't do chart testing or edge-to-edge etc., I just shot with it as-is.

Can't answer anymore as I had to send the camera back. Sorry.

I guess that depends on your capture board and whether it has a TC IN jack, but the HMC150 outputs standard LTC timecode out its composite video jack if you put it into timecode sync mode. So if you had a capture board with HDMI input and LTC timecode input, yeah, that might work.

I did get an official launch date from Panasonic's HMC150 product brand manager. He said "October 2nd."

Well today the UPS man came.....

...with a box that looked too small to be the camera.

Sure enough, it was just the extra battery charger (VW-AD21) that I had ordered with the camera (also ordered two of the 5800mah batteries)

Promising that parts of the order are starting to arrive, though!

I wonder if the zoom and focus ring have any "viscous" resistance (don’t know what its called). I am always jealous of how buttery smooth Sony focus rings are. My DVX100 and DVC80 always had very sloppy focus and zoom rings that looked terrible when used manually. You could never ramp up or down without it looking jerky.

Also, the Sony has another feature I would love to see in the HMC, programmable rack focusing. In the V1U, you can set a beginning point of focus and an end point, and hit execute and it would perform the rack automatically (and will do the same for zooms).

Hey Barry,

How much do you think can be gained by capturing from the HDMI port instead of the SD cards?

For say, keying work?

Substantial image quality gains?

Thanks

Thanks for the link.

I was asking to get an opinion about noticeable visual differences.

Kind of impact related, if you could pick the HDMI feed from the two side by side ect...

I assume you had an original DVX100? The 100A improved on this, and the 100B was better still, and the 200 was better. I'd still like a little more damping in the zoom even so, but it's way better than it was back in the original DVX100 days. The focus ring is buttery smooth with a huge slow graceful travel of about 300 degrees.

Nope. Doesn't have that.

I meant to do that test but just didn't get to it. David Jimerson has an HDMI capture board and we were gonna do a side-by-side.

But HDMI uncompressed is going to be extremely data intensive, so there's probably some compression happening anyway...

Well, it all depends really on which mode you're talking about. I bet the difference between 720/24p AVC-HD and HDMI is going to be a lot less than, say, the difference between 1080/60i AVC-HD and HDMI. No doubt a full uncompressed capture is always going to be better than any compressed capture, if it could be arranged and sustained. But fully uncompressed is something like 200 megabytes per second, which would take a decently-fast RAID to store...
