Hey All.

I have the hvx and am getting the fs 100.. I have heard that you cant record 720 native onto the firestore.. First, what is the diffrence between 720p and 720p native(as it relates to my editor and more impotanlty film out).

2nd ....Does anyone have an established workflow of settings/frame rates for the best possible qualiity for film out ?

Thanks

The update to the firestore will allow you to mimic the native modes of the hvx by only recording the flagged frames on p or pa modes and discarding the rest. It will, in essence, be virtually the same thing. Increased record times as a result, of course.

Can't help you on film out settings, but there are several threads here you can probably find that have touched on the topic.

HAs the latest fire store been released. and can you view your clips on it like on the p2 card. the reason I went the way of the p2 card is cause you can shoot any format including native and also see the clips. if the new fire store does this it makes it more atractive. I may be shooitng a feature soon and the long recording time is appealing. I'm afraid of the instibility though with fire wire. p2s are so solid.

In 24p mode the camera will record 60 fps and flag the 24. So frames are duplicated, then in post the 24 flagged frames are extracted from the 60 stream. In 720/24PN mode the camera only records the 24 frames.
If I was doing a film out I would probably shoot 1080/24PA. Do a search on the forum for "film out". There is someone setting up for one very soon I think.

using an L-shaped bracket helps (from what I've been told) with the firewire stablility problem.
Firestore update has not been released yet, but December seems to be sticking out in my head. It should be in the next couple of months though.
If you are shooting a feature, I would think long record times are not as much an issue as you may think, since you will be having a lot of different takes with just a few minutes shot at once. The deal with that would just be to have a cheap laptop with pcmcia or a compatible external hdd, to offload your footage to.

I am not sure about whether or not the firestore allows you to view the clips. I am pretty sure you can though. Maybe, not quite in the same way you would with p2, but someone else will have to answer that question for you.

You can, in fact view clips on the HVX200 with the Firestore, just not thumbnails yet. The version 3.0 firmware update, that will run for about 30 some odd dollars, will provide thumbnails, if I'm not mistaken.

It will also do Native modes.

It will also do the QuickTime re-wrap, saving FCP users a ton of import time.

It promises to be a really incredable update.

I have situations where I have to run the camera in remote locations for a half out or more. Laptops, swapping out P2 cards is not an option. Thank goodness for the FS-100.

Ben, how will this save a ton of import time? If it takes about 1 minute per gig to copy MXF files from a P2 card or FS into FCP and they are QT wrapped on the way in, will having the files pre wrapped in the FS make it that much quicker copying them over?

Well, yeah! The QT re-wrap takes time! Copy your MXF data to a hard drive, THEN import it into FCP. All that time you wait for in the P2 Import window will be saved. It'll just be the time to copy the already re-wrapped QT files to your local drive.

So if it creates QT wraps on the FS, does it make another file (duplicate)?
The MXF files are like master tapes, they can be imported into most of the NLE systems. If the FS will now create QT files, do you lose the original MXF file?
With that scenario it would seem if you just copy the QT files to your scratch disk and then erase the FS you would not have a master back up anywhere of the MXF files.

Once I have the QT file, I back it up. All the metadata is still there, I don't need the MXF original CONTENTS folder anymore. Why would I? I'd just back up the MXF data.

The FS upgrade I believe will let you chose either. Recording both would cut it's capacity down, as you'd have two of everything.

Yes, the MXF data is like a Master tape. But so is the QuickTime file. Both contain the exact same data. So I can just back up my QT master files, rather than the MXF master files. Both are the same data, just in different wrappers.

And this is pretty specific to Mac/FCP users, who are the majority owners of the FS-100.

Hey BenB,
If the Firestore's 100 gigs roughly equals 100 minutes of MXF files at 1080i... when the Firestore wraps it as QT will that same 100 gigs equal 100 minutes at 1080i?
Thanks,
Jim
