The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Yeah, that rolling shutter is something else! I still think you could do a lot with more restrained static setups on this rig but you're definitely not gonna get away with trying to make the next Cloverfield or whatever (and really, thank the heavens for that).

So what good would it do if the shooting conditions were like this? Can't focus properly and thru a thick window with some kind of stain, give me a break. How can you judge the image like this. Thats a total diservice to all of us.

Wow. :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG

Oh well

Dear John Caballero

You do not have to watch it if you don't want to.

I did not want to post it in the first place but everybody else wanted it.

Do not blame me.

Sugoroku, I for one very much appreciate you posting it. It provides more information than we had previously and I want to thank you for your time and effort. It really is appreciated by some of us.

Sorry sugoroko I spoke too soon before watching the film, I apolagize. I think it looks great. As for the rolling shutter we just can't pan like a maniac. We would need to shoot around its limitations.
Again I apolagize, thank you for your input sugoroku.

Sugoroku, I for one am very grateful for you taking the time and effort in posting this, it answered a lot of my questions and concerns.

Don't blame some members for being a bit tempered, because a lot of people are hopeful for a "revolution" after this cams release

Once again thanks

You have serious hate issues. Get help.

Ted Schilowitz is actually a pretty decent guy.

Dan

I don't have hate issues, but you have to admit... that guy is one cheesy SOB... I don't know him - only know what I've seen of him online (i'm sure he is an awesome dude), but he does act like the Sam Adams guy.

I want what I want, and I don't want to have to pay for it... isn't that the American way?

I'm a bit concerned about this rolling shutter problem

Exposure we can fix in post, rolling shutter HAH

I haven't seen a rolling shutter issue in any of Chase Javis' footage. The only rolling shutter issue seemed to be in a clip that very well could have been on another camera filming the backend of the D90.

Let's kill (repeat KILL) this question until we get some reviews.

Here is the link again.

As for posting it, I felt kind of obligated to do so since I mentioned it.

Anyway, through-the-stained-glass shot is coming up later.

Watch it if you think you can handle it.

Don't tell me I did not warn you!

The guy uploaded (after being asked) his footage for us to see, you do not need to watch it.

You're right, color rendition is very good, very film like. Resolution is decent; if it's soft, that's probably due to focusing. But man, that rolling shutter is horrible. It shows up even in very gentle pan. That definitely rules out this camera as anything else other than a back up piece.

doesn't make any sense with a 2/3 sensor....

Doesn't it? Or didn't you realize that pretty much every DSLR has a 2/3 sensor? Even still... learn to see the humor in things... I was joking. Why would RED want to compete with their market? Would you pay 30k for an EPIC or 17K for a RED ONE if you could get a SCARLET with interchangable lenses for 3k?

Wow. I just finally got the avi downloaded and I think it looks great. It's much better than the Vimeo compressed version. There was some blockiness that I thought might have been the MJPEG but it was all Vimeo.

The rubber funhouse walls caused by the rolling shutter are still crazy though.

Do you know what shutter speed and ISO you were shooting at?

Yeah I thought the sample from sugoroku would fuel the negative perception some people have for this camera without even trying it. But I like what I saw. The rolling shutter problem showed basically when he started panning rapidly from left to right and backwards, so one thing I won't be doing is panning like that at all. It looked pretty focused to me under the circumstances without been used to the proper focusing procedure with the camera. And it certainly looked like "film" to me.
Thank you again sugoroku.

I don't mind the rolling shutter as much as I thought- good enough for me, I just might have to get a bit more graceful with the camera...

Thanks for posting by the way.

You can actually see it even with the slower pans. It's not nearly as bad and I didn't even see it the first time, but after I got past the really bad diagonal fast stuff, I watched the slower pans again and you can see it happening there. Check it out again. Look around the 1minute mark

...but "all" the manual nikon lenses are made for full frame slr cameras. I am sorry that I didn't get you were joking, over at reduser many requested this feature dead seriously so you wouldn't have been the first one.

Hmm the rolling shutter is pretty bad during fast pans but I think I get one anyways :)

thanks for uploading that!

all things considered, for a first release from nikon this is a quantum leap in indie film making as far as i'm concerned. i think nikon really just changed the game big time. literally over night. ok yeah, it took some r&d to put the d90 together, but you know what i mean.

this is just the $999 camera. really makes you wonder what the next cameras at the d300 and d3 levels will offer. either way, if you're someone fortunate enough to have nikon glass already, this seems like a no brainer to me.

can't wait until it's out and we're seeing what some cinematography minded (vs still) people are doing with it.

Are all camera guys such divas? Reading over this, you look like a bunch of whiney bitches judging a photographer's ability to shoot video... I mean... they hired him as a tester, and it looks like he had a lot of fun with this camera. After all, isn't that what this is all about? Or does everyone on here just need to be right all the time?
