The perfect HD on camera monitor for the HVX200?

I suppose Marshall don't read this forum, but wouldn't it be good if they produced a monitor that displayed pixel for pixel using a switch? It could show the centre 800 by 480 pixels of the supplied component signal.

I'd trade that for having output connections...

Hi everybody,
very interested with the Lilliput monitor. I have a car monitor that is 800x480 and it has a VGA input and Composite (not RGB Component. just the yellow video cable in) I plugged the Composite in from the camera and it looked awful. I order the Component to VGA adapter from Lik-Sang but its not here yet. In the mean time, i plugged in my computer to the monitor and it looked great*
*it looked great as far as it being sharp and the color being more accurately portrayed in comparison to the composite cable. I was able to see focus from not focus pretty well. but the monitor I have is not a lilliput and just as the flip downs from the airplanes, if you are not looking directly at it the picture looses color and brightness. I was wondering if the lilliput is better in this regard. I have portable dvd player that has a high res screen and I can see it from the side and it still looks great. How is the lilliput in this regard and how bright is it. the one I have is not too bright.
These are the specs on the monitor I have:
16:9 WIDESCREEN
OSD
2 VIDEO INPUTS
REMOTE CONTROL

RESOLUTION: 800 X 480
POWER SOURCE:
12VDC @ 750 MA
BRIGHTNESS: 350 NIT
VIEWING ANGLE (L/R/T/B):
50°/50°/50°/50°
DIMENSIONS (HXWXD):
5 5/16" X 7 1/16" X 1 1/8"

Please let me know about how well the lilliput is.
Thanks.

I originally purchased the Liliput 7 inch monitor. It worked OK and did a job. Then I played with the Marshall. The next day the Liliput went on Ebay.

Once you have tasted the Marshall 7 inch, the rest are just not in the same ballpark, unless you go even more expensive!

If you can stretch to it, get the Marshall.

Thanks Steve,
Good to know. Now I need to get my hands on a Marshall and see what it looks like. Maybe Sammy's Camera in Los Angeles has one I can evaluate at the store. (or maybe Calumet. I think they sell video also)

The perfect HD on camera monitor for the HVX200?

Has anyone had a chance to compare the Marshall monitor with the Transvideo 6'' Cinemonitor IIIa? My sales rep assures me that the Transvideo is better for focusing, because of its ability to change to greenscreen monitoring. It is also, of course, more expensive.
I'll be shooting 1080i 25p mostly.

Here are the links to the two monitors.

OMG, I've just won an auction on Ebay for a Marshall V-R70P-HDA. So all things going well, is this monitor really as good as they say?

I'm dead excited about receiving my new toy! May my shots never be soft again... :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Transvideo doesn't seem to be capable of HD. I urge you to get a new sales rep. :D

The Transvideo also seems to be geared to video assist monitoring of film cameras...not quite what you are looking for. Get the Marshall...it rocks.

Ebay huh? Good luck... hopefully you didn't get screwed.

Don't get me wrong, I love ebay. Great for used gear and small accessories. I just don't trust it when it comes to important, or namely, expensive items.

Hi Michael, what did you get the Marshall for? I got mine off Ebay as well. Paid a couple of hundred less than B&H prices and saved on VAT and import duty as well. It really is the Dogs B and you won't regret it for a second.

May I add my piece for the Marshall too. Even inside it's plastic bag when it arrived it felt quality, but you switch it on and the picture is fantastic. It's now sitting proudly inside a Petrol PLCD-2. It's tone handling, all the way down to the shadows is wonderful.

It's the only serious choice for a small monitor in my mind, unless you go CRT. But that seems a pain in the arse in comparison.

Hi Steve.

I got it for £709, it's on its way over to me as I type so hopefully I should have it for weekend. As you know from being a fellow UK HVX'er the Marshall is £1299 over here and that's without the Nebtek battery mod (which mine has). On top of that I have a Teletest monitor that we were using, but wasn't quite sharp enough for critical focusing. I'll be selling that so all things considered I'll have got the Marshall pretty cheap.

For the record I didn't get it from that other Ebayer that David S posted, it was from a production company that had one surplus to requirements.

I received the Marshall and after a small test I can confirm that it's excellent. That over grainy look that LCD's usually exhibit isn't there in the Marshall. Nice and sharp, you can tell when something's not quite in focus. I can agree with a lot of those who say it's perfect for the HVX, it's almost as if it was made for the HVX. And not having image flip is not a problem as it's easily perched upside down.

I also had two 8gb P2 cards from a previous shoot that hadn't yet been erased. Played them through and I was blown away not just by the quality but that there were a couple of takes that were soft and the Marshall really showed them up whereas the cameras focus assist and EVF did not.

Really pleased that I took a risk with bidding for one on Ebay. I must add that for anyone thinking of doing like-wise, do what I did and look up the buyer and check their credentials. It's still risky but I spent a few days thinking about it and checking out the sellers company. Turns out they were honest people and packaged the monitor well enough for it to survive the journey from California, USA to Lancashire, UK.

Very happy indeed.

I hope there are a few other manufacturers that take the lead and produce something to compete with the Marshall. The Nebtek approach looks promising. Some of the other ones I've seen on shoots and rented are awesome but I can't afford a 4k monitor.

Clearly, since there are car LCDs for 200 with the same rez... you'd think that one on camera monitor would come out at the marshall quality for like 800 bucks. Would be sweet to have a way of using the Panny battires as well...

I need to buy one for my birthday in January. Hope there are other options. I like the Marshall.. but agree with Barry. When you've seen the higher end LCDs it doesn't compare.. and 1300 isn't cheap.

I don't know what Barry's seen, but about a month ago we had one of those Panasonic monitors on-set (the ones that are advertised on a flyer that comes with the HVX) and besides the problem (for us) that the Panny is not an on camera solution (I think it's 17inch widescreen isn't it?), it having no flip function, and it being darned heavy I'm more impressed with the Marshall. The Panny was very unforgiving with noise (very much like my consumer HD telly). The Marshall deals with the image more like I'd expect a CRT would (not quite as good but still damn fine).

I honestly didn't think that the Marshall would be this good and I'd urge everyone to at least give it a try out. It also seems to be of good build quality, even better than my Teletest monitor and Teletests here in the UK are spoken highly of in the industry amongst DP's and camera-ops.

Typing this with a migraine so I hope I'm making some sense :Drogar-KnockedOut(D

I went to a Panasonic even in Zurich and saw the on camera monitor BT-LH900AE. It's a 8.4" monitor with a resolution of 1024x768. Did anybody use this monitor or was at least able to test it? It's the same family like the LH1700. Seams to be an outstanding on camera monitor but probably 3 times the price of a Marshall (B&H price $4199.95).
