HVX200a or HPX-170 or HMC150

Final Cut Studio 1 will also import P2 data. I'm running 5.0.4 on PPC. I believe the 5.1 upgrade was for Intel.

Barry:

I was referring to p2 card support in FCP HD 4.5. The OP was considering the 170 or the 200a.

Absolutely do not buy a Mac clone if you are running the pro apps.

Right, which is why I advised him that he'd have to "capture" the footage over firewire. As long as you're not using 720pN mode, it'll work. Far more tedious than just updating the software to at least 5.0.4 or later and getting some P2 support...

Psystar is being sued by Apple. I doubt they'll be around very long.
Apple did the Mac clone thing once before. I doubt they'll ever do it again.

Apple's lawsuit not only asked for the cessation of sales but also for a recall of all computers sold. Such a move would, of course, bankrupt the small clone company.

When I get my camera I will update my system and see what happens. Then When I can afford a new mac I will buy one. Or I am going back to PC and Running Vegas. (a lot cheaper than 3 grand)

Does anyone have experience with these mac clones? Is it a viable option?

David have you had first hand experience?

No, it is based upon what I know.

There are no shipping Mac clones. Apple is vigilant in its protection of licensing.

To me at least, buying any Mac clone, unless licensed by Apple, is throwing away money.

Get a refurb or a good used Mac instead.

Does anyone know if we have to use the higher priced Panasonic 32GB SDHC Hi Capacity Cards or can we use the inexpensive SDHC cards that are still class 6 cards?

Thanks again! I'm also on the fence between the two cams but because I do more event and documentary shooting than narrative the 150 may be the one. Hmmm.. The use of cheaper SD cards may sway me to AVCHD..

You can use any Class 6 card. You don't actually need to use Class 6 entirely, you just need Class 6 for the highest-quality modes (17mbps and 21/24mbps). You can use Class 4 for the medium-quality mode, 13mbps. And You can probably even use class 2 for the lowest-quality mode.

Would it be possible in theory for panasonic to make a 170 that records to sd cards?
They did - it's called the HMC150.

Primary differences (other than SD vs. P2) are that the 170 does variable frame rates and standard-definition, the 150 doesn't. Other than that they're quite similar, basically the same camera. 170 is aimed at pros/broadcasters, 150 is more aimed at events/personal use, but it's the same lens, same chips, same color, same "look"...

If you already knew about the 150 and were referring to the 170's DVCPROHD codec, the answer would be no since the cards are not fast enough. But if cost is a main concern, the 150 is clearly the route to take.

As long as everything is up to class-6 spec, you should be able to get away with those super cheap cards (like at newegg/ebay) and watch the prices on the bigger ones drop over the next year.

It seems all too cool that I could pull the card out of my cellphone to grab more video in a pinch!

Thanks Barry on the info. concerning the cheaper Class 6 SD cards that's a major plus! :)

Boy I may be leaning to the HMC150. Hmm..

Here's my situation though, most of my gigs are event type shooting situations which would be perfect with the HMC150 because I can record long conferences on one 32g SD card but I also want a camera to do some quality narrative work as well.

I've got the Letus Ultimate coming soon do you think the HMC150 will pair up nicely for narrative work as well?

I was initially going for the HPX170 but thought event shooting is going to be more expensive with the P2 cards and I could probably only afford an additional 16g P2 card. And sometimes I record 4 to 6 hour long conferences!

Anyone in a similar situation, need to choose soon!

Thanks!

Personally I think it'd be a fantastic combination, but haven't had a chance to test that yet. I'll let you know as soon as I do.

Well, if you thought the 170 was going to be good for you, then the 150 sounds about perfect because it's the same basic camera, same imagers, and the main difference (recording media/codec) seems to be in your favor. You can record 12 hours on a single 32GB SD card.

4 to 6 hour conferences with what delivery medium?
David S. - Just using HDV and swapping tapes every hour practically. A Royal Pain which is why the HMC150 would be a dream in long event situations.

Thank you Barry for your valuable input as always. I think I'm going to go for the HMC150 then. I got some LOMOS with my Ultimate that I'll be trying out with this camera so I'll also let you know how this cam holds up as well. :)

I think I will just get a used HVX200. They are getting pretty cheap and still produce some nice images. And I should not have any problems editing on my PowerPC G5 with FCP HD. The HMC looks awesome but I don't want to have any problems with the edits on my system.

Between the 200A and the 170, I'd recommend the 170 to everyone unless you have a specific need for that DV tape drive.

Can anyone elaborate on this? To use a boxing metaphor, I'm looking for a "tale-of-the-tape" between the HVX200a and the HPX170 -- on Spec-Comm's site , the "height and reach" don't match up. I'm especially confused about the differences in variable framerates.

From what I've gathered, the HVX200a is more expensive (but has a wider lens and miniDV transport for your $) and the HPX170 is cheaper and has superior focus features. What other fine points am I missing?
