Hpx170 News!

Hi Andrew are we going to be informed of our positions on the waiting list?

We are going to stop taking reservations once all of the cameras that are going to in our first shipment are spoken for. Until then, reserve your camera now and you should be in the first shipment unless something major happens to our order.

Thanks for the reservation.

Joe,
Canon wanted $500, so i think $300 is more than fair. This camera is going to be on my shopping cart ! :)

One thing to keep in mind about the PAL upgrade is when a firmware update is performed, it will wipe out your PAL upgrade and you will have to pay Panasonic to upgrade it again so it is very important if you choose this option you keep this in mind. However, Panasonic swoops in to save the day! :) Panasonic has made provisions for those who like to keep their cameras up-to-date by offering a lifetime PAL upgrade for $500. This way, you don't need to pay $300 every time you need to upgrade your firmware.

I understand the desire on Panasonic's part to perform the NTSC/PAL "upgrade" (itself just a firmware change, no?) at its service facility, as a way of finally wrestling some control back over the grey market. And I can understand charging for this feature because it is indeed an upgrade that increases the usefulness and value of the camera.

...but it would gall me to see them *keep* charging for this upgrade every time the camera firmware is updated. Making the customer pay because of a scheme Panasonic created to control the grey market? A scheme that wasn't thought out well enough to avoid this trap? Where's the justice in that? And offering the "bargain" of "free" upgrades for life by paying more the first time is not exactly a great solution either.

Imagine if Microsoft, instead of their simply annoying validation schemes, actually made you send your computer back every time there was an update to Windows, to have them perform the upgrade... solely so that they could control their software licenses better. That would be really bad. Imagine if they then charged you a service fee each time you sent it back. That would be outrageous!

Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine when companies start with the assumption that every customer is a criminal, and let that drive their customer service policies. But when that leads to repeated $300 service depot transactions, something is broken with the system. Why should customers pay more money just because the company can't get a handle on their distribution channels?

Andrew,

I'm on the list for one unit. By the way, thanks for making our monitor transactions so smooth. That Panasonic arm is pretty solid!

Best,

e

Yes Duncan,
I think this is pretty stupid.Who would want to pay 300 dollars extra every time the cam get's a firmware upgrade. What 's the point you will obviously want this feature to stay in the camera when a firmware upgrade comes up.

So what does Panasonic expect .Say for instance if your in the middle of shooting a pal project ,a firmware upgrades comes up making the cam compatible with 64Gb or 128Gb p2 cards or whatever.
You upgrade the firmware to have the abilty to shoot longer but now you can't do anything cause the pal feature is gone. Real smart Panasonic if you think shooters are pretty stupid people.
I guess i'll just pay the five hundred and feel pretty good about myself.

Hey Frobozz and Everts,

It's an unfortunate situation that Panasonic is in. Being a dealer and feeling the pressure that gray marketers are putting on us is bad, then I think about how much more hurt it must be for Panasonic. It takes a few to ruin it for all and that is what makes me feel the way that I'm sure you're feeling.

Thanks for the input guys!

You are very welcome Erik. I'm glad that you are enjoying them.

I can't wait until you get to use your monitors on your new HPX170!

Yeah, my HGTV shoot tomorrow is SD. :( On BetacamSP. Ah well, I can always use the handy "V"ideo inputs on the BTLH80U and 1700W. The HVX200 and F900 looks terrific through component on the 1700W. Just awesome and I'm loving the Scope mark feature and all the rest.

Say, this is a kinda offline hi-jack, but have you seen what Panavision does to their Panavised 1700W monitors? They have monitor hoods that attach with heavy snaps. The "male" side is screwed into the monitor casing on the sides and top and the hood has corresponding female snaps. Very, very nice feature.

Erik,

A good thread isn't a great thread until there is a decent hi-jack and this fits the bill :)

We have those hoods in stock for the 1700. They have screw-in snaps that go into the monitor and then you just button snap the hood on and off. It also has a really cool clear rain hood for the back of the monitor incase it starts to rain.

It's pretty sweet.

We are getting the cameras mid/late September. That's all we know. We have had some people go ahead and pre-order now so that way all of the payment stuff is out of the way and then we just ship out the camera right away.

Have a good one Kholi,

Andrew Hoffman

See, that was barely a hi-jack at all! Awesome, that hood is on my short list. Anything like it for the BTLH80?

e

Damnit! Quit hi-jacking our hi-jack. Yeah, how does the BTLH80 one attach? Those snaps are incredible compared to an average Velcro set-up.

:)
