Hello?? Well I guess a 740x404 MPEG 2 is what it shall be. Now I'm fighting with 5.1 and compressor is still winning.

I'm not sure what your workflow is, Sean, but I'm a little concerned that the projected image will suffer because you aren't using the full resolution (720 x 480). Although your ratio appears to match the widescreen projection you you are going to have your 740 pixels horizontal squashed to 720 and your 404 vertical stretched up to 480. Is there some reason you aren't rendering out at full resolution (720 x 480)? See my post regarding setting up your frame to be 873 x 480 and then making it anamorphic at full res (720 x 480).

Maybe if you post what your work flow is and why you chose to use 740 x 404 we can understand better.

I didnt choose it. I create a 720x480 SD 16x9 timeline in FCP. I then export an MPEG2 and it magically is 720x404, I've been at it for 3+ hours re-rendering and burning frisbees and nothing is changing. I have no idea why I'm losing 76 pixels. Then when i put it up on my widesceen tv it looks really bad, way too wide (the aspect ratio becomes something like 2.5/1)

i think he meant to write 720x404 and came up with that number because when you open a 16x9 flagged file in QuickTime Player it shrinks the height from 480 to 404 to make it geometrically correct. but the file is actually 720x480. he should be fine.

Good call Zak. That makes sense. Shawn, your workflow sounds correct so I think also that you'll be fine. Get it to us and we'll test it and make sure.

Hey guys,
It also might not be a bad idea to get out a hard copy to us just as a fail safe for your film. We want to be ready for any situation and this would be a good backup plan. Pm me and I'll tell you where to send it.

Got your PM.

I'll look into shipping ASAP! I'm on holidays so shipping a hard copy at the last minute may be difficult for me. I'll do my best!

Can I confuse matters by asking if you're showing these at 24p? Does the projector and DVD player both support it?

Zak seems to know much more than I do, so I'll defer to him. However, it is my understanding that all SD DVD players basically have the same capabilities and almost all of the commercial feature films are 24 fps and encoded as such. Cinespace is in the business of projecting films so I will be astonished if their DVD player/projector cannot project 24P properly.

master your mpeg at 24

DVD studio pro will take care of the rest / it will play on all DVD players.

Here's the weirdness, so I exported my 2k 24fps timeline to Compressor then did the Great Quality 90 minute compressor setting. It looks great on my DVD player/LCD combo. Ken checks the MPEG2 after I uploaded it and tells me that its 29.97 and that i somehow did it wrong. Zak thinks this is correct, that its encoded at 23.98 but flagged at 29.97 for proper pulldown (if I understood him correctly). I'm still waiting to hear from Mark if I did it right.

I was checking the file in gspot (media file utility that displays all sorts of information about a media file) and it shows the file as 23.976 pics/s and 29.97 frames/s and interlaced. A proper 24p file will show up as 24 pics/s and 24 frames/s and progressive. It looks like Compressor is doing the interlaced conversion for DVD, but *should* display correctly on a progressive dvd player.

Some more info from a friend at Intel who specializes in this:
DVD’s are always 59.94i – they have to be to maintain compatibility with older interlaced sets/DVD players (which aren’t smart enough to take a 23.976p source and do the 3:2 pulldown on their own). However, the duplicate fields can be flagged as such, so that they don’t need to be encoded twice – instead the player simply redisplays them; that’s probably what gspot means by 23.976 pics/s and 29.97 frames/s – it’s actually both at the same time, if you want to think of it that way.

DVD studio pro will say it's 29.97.

It's applying a telecine.

Zak is exactly right.

Ken. Done it before. Noah will tell you the same thing on the FCP HD workflow DVD.

Master at 23.98 for DVD with the compressor preset for NTSC DVD. it will be good for DVD. It will not burn a 23.98 DVD, it will burn a 29.97 DVD compensating for the 23.98, so it will play on other DVD players.

Promise.

EDIT: read your quoted section. Yes that's it.

Sounds like it.

Compare the motion to your timeline. If it looks the same (or you can't tell the difference) then you are good. Also, you could see by frame by framing if there are any interlaced frames or not.

Wow. I've never had so much trouble doing something so simple.
I'm using compressor ... the mpeg 2 preset "program stream" just standard, no modifications. It drops sound for like 10 seconds in the beginning when I play back. I'm trying again.

I'll make a DVD version and mail it to be sure.

Beginning to upload the Video portion now. Please look at it later and confirm with me that it's correct.

The audio portion will be following shortly...

BTW, the new banner is sweet!
