What are we going to do with no P2 Laptops?

P2 is here to stay. I can't see Panasonic changing the form factor soon.

If they do, they will still have an adapter for the PCMCIA form factor for all the cameras in the field with P2 slots.

It's easier to make an adapter or reader for hardware that does not have PCMCIA.

Remember in the P2 card is four HIGH speed sd cards, and essentially a RAID controller which was very expensive to develop. AND WORKS EXTREMELY WELL.

the bottom line.

Have no fear, there is absolutely no chance that P2 cards will be absolete anytime soon.

So, buy a laptop now. It'll be good for several years at least.

Even if new laptops no longer have the PCMCIA slot, how does that affect you if you already have one?

I'll be editing in FCP so I need the PC Laptop as a simple cheap card reader. It really makes sense. As to availability - I wanted to get this local last night (Rochester MN) and we don't have any PC-like stores. Wal-Mart/Best Buy/Staples all carry many brands and models. After literally looking at 100's of laptops, Staples had one Acer left, a discontinued floor model. I never buy like that.

The Geek Squad (Best Buy) and Staples very knowledgeable associates said they would not be getting in Laptops with PCMCIA slots again. Wal-Mart sales associates could barely find the Laptops let alone talk knowledgably.

I think there is a real issue raised by Green Hornet, I will likely check Radio Shack tomorrow (not a fan of RS) or bite the bullet and take the Acer. I have some confusion when looking online to purchase, many of the PCs listed on Barry’s Post:

Don’t specifically mention either the PCMCI slot or a P2 Card reader in their specs. It makes me nervous about purchasing one online I’ll address that in that string.

I agree with David – better buy now.
