Hi,

I have taken the prototype (the wired one) on a shoot with me and it was very successful. We had a pro focus puller working on the set and he loved it (hes ordered one) He said the accuracy and performance rivaled a bartech.

The electronics for the wireless prototype will howpfuly be working tomorrow and once it is sorted Il stick it in a case and test it. I aim to have units ready to ship in the next month, im very near the finish line.

Heres a dolly shot we did with an SGpro and 28mm canon lens. Note that you cant hear the motor.

Paul (the focus puller) was not there on this day so I did the pull. It was even cleaner when he was on the 'knob.

Well I could if all cameras used the same LANC protocol. It seems that the hvx and the sony cameras use different lanc systems so it would be quite hard to work out. If these cameras were like the Red it would be much easier. on the red there is a lemo plug and you just short the two pins and it sets it to record. I could easily put a relay inside the receiver to do this. Unfortunatly the focus unit couldn't give a tally light to the focus puller, as that would mean having a transmitter in the receiver and a receiver in the transmitter, which would get quite expensive and complicated.

Maybe V2 can have a record button...

The Panasonic cameras don't use LANC, they are GPI, dry contact closure (Just like RED). All it takes to presse record on Panasonic cameras is a relay pulse.

But as you mention; Sony, & Canon use LANC .. and that's a little toughter as it's a serial command. You could always butcher/copy a cheap LANC zoom controller - like the Libec ZC-3DV to get a pre-programmed serial interface chip.

I have absolute confidence that I could do a remote rec startstop on the box, but there is one or two drawbacks. First, it would cost mroe to produce (obviously), second its a differnt system for differnt cameras, and third, the box wouldnt be able to tell you if it was recording or not, as this would require a receiver and trasnsmitter in both boxes which would put the price up significatintly, and for an ON?OFF light its probably not worth it...

Web site address subject to change, pictures subject to change, specs subject to change and links subject to change, in fact count on it.

Hehe.

I am actually announcing soon The GREEN PURPLE RAY and GREEN PURPLE ONE.

But count on that changing as well. LOL

I'm still very interested in this. Keep posting updates as you have 'em, i'm excited to see the finished product.

Afew updates:

the firmware for the processors (all six of them) has been written and im waiting to refine the code and get it all working.

Also I have had an ichat meeting with the laser cutting company and Im quite excited about the new motor mount. It will be layered delrin (a very ridged plastic) with an internal hidden spring to keep the gears meshing and to compensate for eccentric gear rings. We are going to try to keep it nice and smart, with nice curves and engraving.

The motor will mount on 15mm/60mm spacing but if anyone needs 100m spacing or 19mm rods then im sure we can work it out for you.

Its all coming along very nicely...

Wow. Nice work. I'm pretty excited for it now.

this is so exciting. is the pricepoint still about the same as you had mentioned before? Are there going to be increases as you bring it to market?

Well making it wireless and the receiver has put the price up a little bit. I have increased the production quality quite a bit too. Everything is CNC or laser cut and engraved. The electronics uses a crystal resonator to keep it accurate and it is all surface mount soldered.

The price has gone up, but dont worry, its still a definite bargain and its functionality is excellent.

"Bait and Wait"! Hilarious. That's exaclty how most of us feel about waiting for the RedRock stuff to finally make it out of their grubby little paws. I was excited to see what their follow focus was going to be like, but it looks like you'll be beating them to the punch.

Now just powdercoat that sucker when it's all nice and working, slap your logo on it and we're good to go...

Actually that brings up an interesting point: what ARE you going to call the unit anyway?

Its actualy going to be anodized. I think a chemical process is tougher than sticking something to it.

It will also be engraved, not stickered.

Im still considering a name.

We did think about maybe the Hocus-Focus :-D

Well damn! Can you give us any idea on pricepoint and expected delivery so that us anxious dvxusers can start planning on purchasing this puppy?

Hocus-Focus... hmm sounds too hocus-pocus. You need some numbers in there... and lots of letters.. like the HFX-Pro... or something like that
