Background suggestions for video shoots

I'm going to shoot some simple videos in my apartment that will include a single HVX-200 close-up of me discussing different topics and demoing small gadgets. The videos will be shot in either 720 or 1080, and will be later downconverted for the web, though they may also be distributed on DVD.

I want to create some type of background that I can be placed against rather than just a white wall. I thought about painting the wall a different color or purchasing some type of material, such as a brick pattern, from Home Depot that will create a textured background.

1. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding a wall color that might work well for this type of project? One that holds up well when video is compressed as h.264 and delivered through the FLV or QT player?

2. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding textured materials that might work well for this type of project?

Thanks for any advice.

No matter what you end up putting on that wall... make sure you are far enough away from it.

When you say "far enough away from it" I was thinking of around 5-ft. What are you suggesting?

I do not think the sound quality is all that great...I have not recorded anything in it...any suggestions for improving what might be poor apartment sound quality?

Drape some blankets the walls to sort the echo/bounce/harshness.

If you live by the motorway or the rail track...no fix for that!

Shoot a test with sound.

sound - use an external hyper-cardioid on a fixed boom over your head pointing down. (btw, I learned this from the very excellent sound video found Here)

1. If properly lit, will a background color or photo that is keyed in later appear any different than if it was captured in the original shot? Do keyed backgrounds appear flat, dull, etc.?

Thanks.

Key BG and decide later.

BTW- hows the sound quality in your apartment?

Thanks for the link. I'm going to check it out. In the meantime, how is a boom better than a lav attached to a collar though?
