These were edited & CC'd in Vegas 6 (the R6 'for sale' video was shot in Auto mode and not CC'd in any way).

The cats had it coming!

any idea how to do that mosaic-blur (that was on your license plate) in premiere pro 1.5? -- how did you do it in vegas (i have both)?
the cats were hilarious!! how did you get that shot that was close to the ground to be so smooth (when you followed the drenched cat around)? any stabilization device?

I used Vegas 6, but not Premiere. I've always been meaning to learn Premiere & After Effects, since I'm a Photoshop guy at heart. I think Premiere & AE would be great to get used to, since I think I could eventually kick ass at some serious effects & compositing using my Photoshop upbringing to full advantage.

In Vegas, there is a tutorial on how to do that mosaic blur effect. Search the help file index for "blur" and click on the second topic that comes up: "How to Blur a Face (or a License Plate or Any Portion of a Video."

Basically, you create a copy of the video clip, go to the "Video Event Pan/Crop" dialog for that clip, and click on the Layer Mask checkbox. At the first frame where the blur effect is needed, use the pen tool to create a path that serves as your mask outline around the area that needs to be blurred out.

In my case, I did extensive keyframing and path editing to make the mask follow the motion of the camera and keep the path outline exactly at the license plate edge. I really got precise. I realized afterwards that I probably did WAY too much work, partly because I'm used to Photoshop and Illustrator. I really put more effort than necessary into making sure the mask was precisely aligned with the edges in all frames. In the end, I could have simply made a four-point box instead of a full license plate outline, complete with curved corners. I could have cut out 80% of the work that I actually wound up putting into it. I suppose I learned the hard way, which happens often :)

But anyway, after you've got your layer mask created and keyframed to follow your target, apply the mosaic FX to that clip and layer that track on top of the original video. Everything outside the mask becomes transparent. Really simple process.

---

As far as the smooth cat shot (that's Chubby, by the way - the coolest and most chill cat around): Bone-stock handheld with the top handle... Just made a concerted effort to keep it steady while walking (sideways at times). I have a Steadicam Merlin, but I didn't use it in any of these clips. It would have made this particular shot mirror-smooth, but it was spur-of the moment shooting.

I liked the time lapses. The cats were funny but kinda mean. Heh.
Thanks!

These cats are all the ones that live outside my landlord's house (except one which, by luck, didn't make an appearance near the drop zone in the few days I was in my cat+water phase). They are all very friendly and we love 'em all. I like to believe they don't mind the occasional tormenting, because they'd have left long ago :)

I used buckets of water from the second story roof. Dumping buckets of water from roofs onto just about anything is funny, even more so onto our awesome cats. If there were infants, I think that could possibly top the cats, but they just don't come around here and nap outside near the side of the house often enough to make a compilation like this.
