to trust ebay or not?

Why would you put a 250GB drive in a Firestore? Aren't Firestores FAT32 only?

yeah...so? what does fat32 have to do with it? 250gb just gives you more recording time. gives you 2.5 times as much actually as the stock drive. it's still formatted fat32, just holds WAY more now.

FAT32 can only access 120GB (or so - I forgot what the exact number is).

That actually refers to the windows - microsoft personal computer implementation. I would guess that firestore would use a proprietary addressing scheme.

actually some brands, like OLD western digital drives for some reason couldnt be formatted higher than 160gb (not 120gb) as FAST32, but that isnt really a problem anymore, plus, you have to use that EXACT 250gb hitachi travelstar if you are gonna upgrade your firestore. that is the drive that Focus puts in the FS-100-250 that they sell anyway...theres nothing else different about it from the standard, FS-100 except the HUGE pricetage. why not do it yourself to a regular fs-100 for another $100?

you're welcome Berk 0 make sure you follow all those instructions to the letter. i did mine on a thick rubber mat, with thin gloves on for half of it (had to take them off for some of the small cables)...no static, and well cushioned.

The FS-100 product manager told me in an email yesterday that the FS-100-250
uses a "completely different board set than the 160 and 100Gb models".

Your being able to swap for a 250Gb hard drive certainly makes the information I
received suspect. How many partitions are there with the 250Gb?

Isn't there already a "classified" section on this forum where users put up their used equipment for sale?

i had my hvx for sale here on the forum marketplace for about 4 days and only got one response. i put it on ebay and it sold in 2 days. there are a lot of good folks here and on ebay who are very legit.

here is my advice for the safest ebay and forum purchases. if youre buying new. ONLY buy from verifiable authorised dealers that youve seen on the forum. abel cine, spec comm, full compass, b&h, microsearch. etc

if youre buying on ebay, dont buy from a dealer (unless they are a recognized authorized one) buy from an individual. an individual who has a spotless record of more than half a dozen transactions of higher priced items. and even safer if the transactions are gear related. 3 beany babies and 2 snow globes then suddenly 1 hvx doesnt count.

and if youre buying here. buy from a senior member - or at least someone who has 100 or more posts or at least a number of posts where they show that they know something about the industry. not that junior members are in any way bad - but someone with a track record of activity here likely wont want to sully their reputation

straying from these suggestions wont neccessarily get you into trouble. but in several years most of the bad stories ive heard told could have been avoided if theyd have heeded such advice.

it really just comes down to common sense.

saving up for a hvx200, has anybody ever bought one from ebay? everything seems extremely gray market and shadey, just want to know if anybody has had any experiences getting their camera there.
Yes, got mine on ebay for $3950 USD, brand new. From a reputable dealer over 6,000 positive feedbacks. They tried to upgrade like crazy but all in all it was a good deal. Brand new, not gray market, I registered it with Panasonic with no problems.

Check the feedbacks on eBay and determine whether you consider this a trustworthy seller.

FWIW, I've bought over 250 items on ebay (including P2 cards) and have been burned only once (6 years ago and it was my fault for going outside of the ebay bidding system ... they were selling A VX-2000 for $900 ... should have known better).

YMMV.

Hello to all on this board, I am a new member as I am looking to purchase one of these fine cameras very soon. I found a site online called soniccameras.com and I was wondering if anyone here was familiar with them. They seem legit but the price almost seems to good to be true so I am a bit wary. If I am allowed to post links on this board here it is:

http://soniccameras.com/catalog/pro...om/compare.asp?item=AGHVX200&products_id=3737

Please tell me your thoughts, I am not wealthy and this is such a good deal but I can't afford to get screwed over. Thanks in advance for all your help!

This is a typical scam outfit. They are offering a $5000 camcorder for $1499, Stop and think about this for a minute.....that is 1/3 of the regular price. If someone offered you a new car for 1/3 of the going price would you be suspicious?

Spec comm put up a page about grey market cameras here:

http://www.spec-comm.com/hvx200faq.php

But that page is about dealers who will actually send you a camera of some sort. The kind of dealer who will advertise an HVX for $1499 is not about to send you anything. He will just attempt to upsell you with garbage accessories
or charge your card and not send a thing, leaving you to fight for a refund.

not true. i bought an hvx200 from ebay user "time2envy" about 2 weeks ago for around $3700+shipping (same person who i bought my canon hv20 from when it came out almost a year ago). .. im happy. came in original panasonic box, brand new accessories and everything.

I would bet that this is not a US camera, and is most likely a Gray Market import. Most of the boxes look the same, and you would really have to know what to look for to tell for sure. None the less, this is a great price, but in my opinion it is a fairly dangerous practice to purchase something that you require to help you make money from someone that has no authorized link to the manufacturer. Now if you are purchasing a used camera, this is a little different as it is undertstood that you are buying a used camera, but be careful. It is an unlevel playing field out there and the seller has the upperhand, especially in an on-line negotiation.

Best,

Jan

Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY from and eBay seller/company called Time2Envy. They sell grey market cameras. I purchased a Canon from them and it was an import and they refused to accept the return, even though their auction clearly stated the US version of the camera. I just dont want anyone else to have to go through what Ive had to go through with this company!
