Iron Man footage

Ok, it seems that was an unnecessary panic attack brought on by Variety. Jon Favereux has set us fans straight, saying that the tinman will be flying after all. I am glad, because that would have been a much bigger mistake than the Batnipples by a long shot.

Iron Man is now the highest rated comic book movie EVER! Go check Rottentomatoes... 94%...incredible.

This is definitely on my list now, I mean I wanted to see it all along but now I'll be there first showing. This is good news.

Batman has some competition.

Just got back from seeing it. I had high expectations going in (read a lot of positive reviews) and wasn't disappointed. Definitely one of the better superhero films ever made. No complaints. It was A LOT of fun.

Just saw it! Superb popcorn fun. Downey is to this movie what Johnny Depp was to Pirates, although I like this film better than any of those three flicks. My only criticisms would be that the ultimate villain is a little 2 dimensional and his transformation strains credulity towards the end, and parts of Paltrow's performance were a little wooden (mainly her acting during the action scenes). Better than the Spider Man movies for me (although it's a close call) as it doesn't get mired in the angst ridden soap opera dramatics of the Raimi flims . It doesn't achieve quite the depth of Batman Begins or the soaring grandeur of the first Superman, but it's a blast to watch in action.

Just saw it and despite it's flaws (minor ones at that) definitely the most entertaining, witty and intelligent of the superhero films.

It had a few flaws but overall it was a great superhero movie.

I was a big fan of Iron Man back in the day. This movie did not disappoint.
Downey NAILED the Stark role. I can't imagine anyone portraying him any better.

I'm definitely seeing this one more than once.

We all enjoyed it thoroughly. It was hilarious at points, without going to the Cheesy side... well, maybe the interaction with the robots crossed that line, but we all laughed our arses off! The biggest flaw I saw, was the end... and even the end after the end credits- ya gotta love those last moment surpises :)

Stan Winston and ILM did some serious magic, and Favereux just became my favorite comic movie Director.

Okay, it's time to temper some of the outrageous enthusiasm about this movie. If you go in thinking this is as great as all the critics say it is, you're going to be sorely disappointed. This movie was not bad (a bad movie would be, say, Transformers) but it was average at best. The movie held very few surprises, which left the duty up to the action sequences, which you've of course already seen the meat of in the trailer. Why would any movie save a great shot for the film these days? Gotta put all the best stuff in the trailer! *sigh*

Let's start with Robert Downey Jr. Was he good? Of course he was good. But let's get something straight here. Robert Downey Jr. is doing absolutely nothing different than he's ever done in any other role. He's playing the exact same character. Pop in any of his movies and sub in these characters for the characters he's talking to and he could be playing Tony Stark. So let's calm down before calling this acting job a tour de force.

The other thing they got right was the dynamic between him and Pepper Potts. I know nothing about Iron Man the comic so when I say they got it "right", I just mean in the sense of general movie relationships. There was a genuine chemistry there that felt real and you really wanted them to get together.

Unfortunately this is where things get kinda bad. The story was pretty lame. I mean he's gotta stop the Afghans from using his weapons? Granted the twists that come later add a little more to this story, who cares about fighting the Afghans? I know the Iron Man nerds are going to say, "Well that's the story about how Iron Man became Iron Man" - an update of the whole Vietnam thing. I don't care about that. I didn't come to the movie to compare it to the comic. I came to it to enjoy a movie. This was lame. We're obliterating the Afghanees in real life as it is. Now we add insult to injury by having one of our comic book heroes join in on the carnage? I don't know. It made me feel like an American a-hole (and not in the way they intended).

The movie itself took too long to get going as well. I'm not one of these "it's an origin movie so they waste too much time doing the origin stuff". Just tell a good story, origin or not. But there was a lot of time wasted before he gets in the real suit. It's like, "c'mon already." I felt that could've been sped up and we would've had more time for Iron Man to do battle. That being said, some of the creating of the final suit was cool. Unfortunately, him learning how to fly was just like every other comic book movie learning how to fly scene.

I thought the nebulizer circular heart doodad was not very well done. There were a couple of weird parts, early on, where he actually has a gray t-shirt, and I guess cuts a perfect circle in it so that his nebulizer could be showing. Why he would do this I have no idea (later on it's covered). In addition, there's an incredibly awkward scene where he asks Pepper Potts to take out the old nebulizer, even though it puts him into cardiac arrest. And then, while he's basically laughing while having a heart attack, he has her put int he new one. Uh, whah??? That whole thing was kinda weird.

The action sequences were very basic and were nothing to write home about. They seemed like they needed more money. The best of the bunch was the jet battle. But like I said, you already saw the coolest parts in the trailer so who cares? There were no surprises. Nothing that made you go, "whoa". And the "whoa" moments are the moments summer movies are made of. They're the ones you talk to your friends about later. I didn't see any of those here.

Okay, I hate comic book movies, so take this review with a grain of salt. I think the best of the bunch is Batman Begins (I liked how they made it feel like it could all really happen) but I thought the Spiderman movies were god-awful and the X-Men movies were pretty stupid too. So that should give you a bit of an idea where I'm coming from. Having said all that, I'd have to put this right behind Batman Begins on the comic book movie list. In a genre I don't particularly like, it's worthy of second best.

Just remember guys, Rotten Tomatoes means nothing. They've given all the Harry Potter Movies 80% or higher. That says everything right there.

Duly noted!

POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW

I'm a comic book "nerd" and I loved it.
Luckily my favourite scenes were not in the trailer. For example... much of the early suit testing in Stark's private lab, absolutely hysterical!
As well as when Iron Man shows up to protect the village and destroy the compound of Stark weaponry. My fav scene of the entire flick.

PS- I don't like all comic book movies, just the good ones. I hated the last X-Men installment for example.

BTW, I did not read one review before seeing this movie. I try to stay away from that sort of thing whenever possible.

Cheers!

Yeah, that scene was pretty cool. forgot about that one. But the "money shot" where he destroys the tank is spoiled in the trailer.

I will say that it's very hard to come out with a summer movie these days. Each one is so incredibly overhyped that it becomes impossible to live up to the expectations. The last great summer movie in my eyes was The Matrix and that's because nobody knew it was coming.

re: The Happening trailer that played before the movie. Does anybody else laugh when Mark Wahlberg says "honeybees". It just seems funny to me that M. Night is making this movie about the apocolypse and he starts off the trailer with, "Does anybody know why these honeybees are dying?"

You'll get no argument from me on the fact that todays trailers reveal far too much. I completely agree.

I still like the movie though. :)

I agree about The Matrix as well. I walked into it knowing very little and I was blown away.

c.g eads you nailed it completely. agree with your thoughts.

as regards to trailers giving away too much now days... think thats always been the case. watch any of the 4 minute trailers from the 60s/70s. The original Planet of the Apes trailer gave away the ending!

Do you guys ever check out the Onion? They did a piece about how Hollywood was taking the fan favorite Iron Man trailer, and making a full length movie out of it. Their concern was that with all the extra time, they could really ruin the trailer with a bunch of stupid stuff.

I enjoyed it, I thought the humor was done in very good taste and worked for this movie. Boy, Jeff Bridges looks different.

The movie was okay, but nothing too special. All the hype is false. I will admit that the special effects were awesome, the humor was well done. The acting and dialogue really fell apart toward the end (which dragged on about 40 minutes too long). I give it a 6/10.

And how many of the easter eggs did you spot?

Went to this movie expecting the usual cheesy dialogue that is usually associated with comic book or cartoon adapted films. (transformers)
I was surprised by this film, it rocked and the dialogue was not a bunch of crappy one liners. Nice! Also, two thumbs up to the effects team.

I didint follow the film during its development nor did i watch the trailer. However, as I was watching the movie, I already know that X is going to be the love interest and Y is going to be the nemesis with the big ending fight sequence.

Here comes all the "No storyline just LOOK AT MY CG" superhero movies that Hollywood dumps upon us. It must be Summer already and dont forget to bring the kiddies to MC D or BK to get that movie toys.

Do we really need another Superhero movie ?
