HVX200A or HPX-170

The thing I can't figure out,

HPX-170 - 5 year factory warranty
HVX-200a - 1 year factory warranty

Jan, are you guys keeping the one year warranty on the HVX-200a just because it has a tape drive? That makes it a no brainer to buy the 170 regardless.

Dan

Yep, the moving parts is the issue. All P2HD gear with no moving parts get the five-year warranty. As I understand the program, you get one year automatically and you can register on their site to get a four-year extension.

Does anyone think that the lack of a tape mechanism will make the hpx170 cheaper? Or is that a negligible cost for panasonic to manufacture?

They've already said that it might be a little less expensive than the HVX200. The fact that it has a lower model number (170 vs. 200) implies that it should be less expensive too. Maybe $200 is my guess.

But the HMC150 does less. Please don't ask me to explain the silly numbering scheme. I have a theory that it is based on some interpretation of Feng Shui. ;-)

Best,

Jan

I've been trying to decipher the numbering/lettering scheme for years. It used to be "X" = 24P, but that doesn't appear to be true anymore (witness the HMC150, I would have thought it would be HMX150).

As for numbers, the numbers do appear to be ascending due to size and price, but moreso on price.

For price: HSC1 < HMC70 < DVX100 < HMC150 < HPX170 <= 200 < 500 < 2000 < 2700 < 3000 < 3700

For size: 1 < 70 > 100 < 150 = 170 < 200 < 500 < 2000 = 2700 = 3000 = 3700

(meaning: the HSC1 is smaller than the HMC70, but that's bigger than the HMC150, which is the same size as the 170, which is smaller than the 200...)

It's still better than the system Canon and Nikon use for their DSLRS. The Nikon D70 is better than the D40 but not as good as the D60. Weird. Or how Canon went from D30 to D20 on down and is now going from 20D on up.

I'm in a bit of a bind and I think I am going to have to get a 200a for some upcoming projects that demand lower noise and better low light performance than my current 200 can deliver. Then get the HPX170 in the fall.

We will be using a 35mm adapter so I am interested to know it the 200a now has the ability to flip the image in the LCD like the 170.
