AG-HPX170 - Is It Real

Better question would be if the hpx170 is PAL?NTSC switchable, that would be cool.

I don't think so, because in Panasonic Broadcast Europe I found a press release that called the camera hpx171 not hpx170, so there are two different version depending on the area.

But what I find strange is that in that same press release you can read this:

The HPX171 offers a 20-step, frame rate
selection in 720p mode for variable-speed shooting in the 12-fps to 60-fps range to
acquire fast- or slow-motion in-camera effects.

So this means that even in PAL you can have 60fps?

I think they just used the US spec., probably the Euro spec is not yet available. We europeans come always last !!! Probably the hpx170 will hit the European Marcket in the first Q of 2009.:embarasse

This may be a stupid question but what are the true differences between the:

HMC150
HPX170
HVX200a

???
Can't answer all questions yet, but the 170 and 150 are both smaller than the 200A, and lighter too. The 200A has DV tape, the others don't. The 150 is AVC-HD, the 170 is P2.

The 150 is AVC-HD, the 170 is P2.

Not to be nit picky here Barry - but I'm going to be nit picky.
:)

Shouldn't we be saying the 150 is AVC-HD and the 170 is DVCproHD/50/25 ?

I'm only pointing this out because theoretically you could record just about anything to P2 - including AVC-HD.... personally I would have loved to have seen the inclusion of an AVC-HD option on the 200a (and the 170).

Anyhow - I just don't want to see anyone on here getting confused between recording format and medium.

Does anyone know what the resolution of the LCD will be on the HPX-170???

Love my HVX200, but I've been dying to see an improvement on the low-res screen of the HVX200.

Oh please the hpx170 be ntsc/pal switchable.. if it isnt i think i might just bite the bullet and find the money for a 500..

I don't think it will, my opinion is based on the fact that there are already several model numbers of the hpx170 (at least for euroope hpx171,). Well this is just me guessing...

Well ilauzirika, I think you guessed wrong about the Hpx170. It is ntsc/pal switchable according to Panny. The Hvx200a is not of course. Lucky us europeans.

The LCD is the same on the 200a and the 170. It is the old HVX lcd.

Nothing is really stripped away from the HVX other then the tape drive.

The reps are saying the HVX200a and the HMC-170 with be prices "comparatively."

They have the exact same imaging block. HD/SDI + 20 VFR settings + a LOT lighter.

Panasonic has not announced price on the 170 but said it should be "comparable" to the HVX200 (now HVX200a). As I see it, it is basically the camera Panasonic should have made for the HVX200-- virtually the same camera but with no tape drive AND includes HD-SDI.

Stupid question:

Any idea on pricing on the 170?
No firm price was announced. I think they said it would be in the same ballpark as the HVX.

Getting pricing from a Japanese company is tough right now, because the dollar's in the toilet. Fuji refused to give me pricing info on their P2 cards, and those are due to ship in "a couple of months." All they'd say is "pricing will be competitive."

When we're looking at maybe 8 months before these things hit the shelves, the companies seem quite reluctant to commit. I still expect that the 170 will be less expensive than the current 200A. Maybe $5795, maybe $5495, who knows, but I don't think there's any way it'll be more expensive (unless the 200A receives a price increase).
