Sony XDCAM EX3 with 35mm adapter image flip capability

LuckyStudio 13

The Tapeless One
Notice that "mirror image" flip switch on the evf/lcd monitor. Is that Sony listening to the Indie crowd ???

This is huge for the people that does not want to deal with the hassle of the 35mm adapter module (price and elevated rail support).

Does that viewfinder flip up to reveal the LCD? If so, that's pretty creative!

Also notice the LCD/viewfinder is on a rotating connector so you can put it up high or down low for best operator comfort.

The back looks like a fold-able shoulder rest. I hope I am wrong on that assumpstion asI seriously dont know how practical this is, considering how think the material looks. Not to mention, how all the weight will be to the front of the camera.

Also notice that there are 2 hot shoes on the camera. This will be perfect for mounting 2 wireless receivers for that 'single crew run n gun interview/documentary' shoot.

It also has a 6-pin firewire, judging by the size of the plug. Although there's not much need for one as no one's going to use HDV for import.

Looks great, will this camera be better than the EX1? Will it solve the EX1 its problems? Or am I going to fast here? :)

Actually, that's a good question!

Someone brought up at the "other" forum that the EX3 makes its look like the EX1 was a beta release to have us work out all the bugs. Of course this is not true, but I'm sure all of the info they gathered from the EX1 issues (many at that) "should" be addressed before the release of the EX3.

ok I think I am confussed, this new sony can can have 35mm lenses or do you still need something like a letus extreme to use 35mm lenses, someone help me out overhere I know this cam does changable lenses I am just trying to get the details

thanks guys

You will need a relay and a adaptor for it to work. You can't just stick a Nikon 17-35 in the hole left by the stock lens.

Now if you could do that, it would be mervellous!

The mount on the Ex3 and hpx are called b4 mount. Letus is producing a b4 relay lens but they want ~$4500 for it. Relay lens + 35mm adapter is going to cost around $6000. Add that to the price of the Ex3 and suddenly, Red One might be a better choice.

Thats why a lot of ppl are hoping on the Red Scarlet. I really hate 35mm adapter, but it is a necessary evil.

P/S: I think all the trouble with the Ex1 lens issues stems from the Fujinon lens being out of alignment with the Ex1 sensor. At least the EX3 has a seperate Lens, so hopefully it wont exhibit any of the Ex1 early lens problems.

P. Bloom already did a review on it here -

sorry I deleted it. I didn't know it wasn't available yet.

Sorry Philip.

can you delete that link please. it's not for public consumption. It will be official on philipbloom.net very soon but if people use that link my whole site will crash very quickly.

Alright, here's the major thing. This thing is interchangable and it COMES with a lens.

Ouch. That just put a hurtin' on Canon and Pana.

Now all you need is a B4 mount and you're good to go for ANY SHOOTING SITUATION. Narrative or ENG.

Very nice.

kholi, that letus $4500 relay lens + letus ultimate (wht another $4k ??) will take the total price of the setup to near $18k. Despite the horrendous RED ONE workflow, I choose the RED.

Same deal goes with the hpx500, we need a $2k b4 relay adapter in order to make it affordable to the indie crowd. But with Letus selling out to Zacuto, things are just going downhill.

You show me where you can get a working RED ONE for 18k and I'll show you where a pot of gold is.

9K for a Relay Adapter setup is perfect. I can't wait for my Relay and Ultimate to arrive, and will be shooting HPX500.

That said, shooting RED ONE kills any adapter setup. There's no way in hell we would've been able to get the light we got on last night's shoot with an HVX + Adapter setup.

And what are you talking about Letus selling out to Zacuto? The Ultimate has been in development for quite some time and is a Letus product. Zacuto is just riding the Le Brothers' coat-tails. The unit is priced According to benefits and that's pretty much being an SGpro and Extreme rolled into one. The price is right, whether it's worth it to an individual is simply a matter of choice
I love shooting RED. But, it ain't no 18k run and gun. Sorry.
